Owain Doull MBE is a Welsh track cyclist and Olympic champion, specialising in the team pursuit and individual Scratch races. He is the first Welsh-speaking athlete to win Olympic gold.
Owain visited Maindy Centre on Thursday 9th February to congratulate Youth Riders from his first Club –Maindy Flyers Youth Cycling Club on their recent successes on the track.
The 2017 Welsh Championships took place in January, and the Maindy Flyers featured highly in the results, winning gold, silver and bronze medals and 2 Welsh Champion jerseys!
Success from the Maindy Flyers was as follows:
- Zoe Backstedt – Under 14 Welsh Champion.
- Gethin Price - Under 14 Welsh Points Champion and Under 14 Welsh Madison Champion.
- Ifan Roberts - Jones winner of the silver medal in the U14 Welsh Madison Champs.
- Ryan Phillips - winner of the bronze medal in the Under 16 Welsh Madison Championship.
Maindy Flyers also competed in other events, such as the Celtic Series (A series of open road 10 mile Time Trial Events) and the first round of the Icebreaker (a track omnium that attracts riders from all over the UK to test out their track skills early on in the season).
Success also came through these events with podium finishes for Ryan Phillips who won the Celtic Time Trial Series in the Juvenile category, and Elen Price, who won the bronze medal in the Under 12 Girls category.
Congratulations to all Maindy Flyers on all their efforts- a great start to 2017!
Owain spent the evening on the track putting the club members through their paces, then enjoyed a question/answer session and of course lots of autographs and photos!
