Step into Summer

With the nights getting lighter, the days warmer and the summer holidays finally on the horizon, Maximilian Goodchild, Better Community Sports Manager has pulled together the following tips that will help boost your energy levels, shed pounds and feel body confident this summer.

Take control

The best way to kick start a lifestyle change is to write down your goals and the reasons you want to reach them. Set realistic goals and then stick to them.  If you ‘fall of the wagon’ for a day or two, don’t give up, refocus and pull your fitness programme back on track.

Go for a run

If you’ve been inspired by this month’s London marathon then get your trainers on! Running is the best aerobic exercise you can get and offers a wealth of different options.  If you’re happier working out inside, then try the treadmills at your local leisure centre. 

Make a splash

Pool-based exercise is also a great way to get fit and lose weight.  It’s non-weight bearing so you’re less likely to injure yourself and its ideal for people not used to exercising or with injuries.  Better pools and leisure centres offer everything from lane swimming to lessons, aqua aerobics and even synchronised swimming.

Add some weights 

Adding some simple weight training, using hand weights, barbells or resistance machines, will burn even more calories and tone your muscles more efficiently than cardio exercise alone. Try performing three sets of 15-20 squats, with a 30-45-second rest between sets, while holding dumbbells. It’s a great way to tone your lower body.

 

Stretch it out 

If the lithe, lean look is what you’re after then take a Pilates or Yoga class.  It’ll help you focus on your breathing and stretch out your muscles, helping to tone without increasing bulk.  Lower impact activities like these are a great way to de-stress after a hectic day at the office or looking after the kids.

 

Have fun

If you have fun whilst keeping fit, you will be more likely to keep it up. If you don’t like running, don’t run. Find an activity that gets your pulse racing and you enjoy, that way you won’t want to stop exercising.
