The finals of the 2016 Primary schools Cup was held at Market Road on Thursday 29th September. Organised by the Islington Football Development Partnership (Islington Council, GLL and Arsenal in The Community) with the Islington School Sports Team, 8 primary schools (St Johns Highbury Vale , Canonbury, St Mary’s, Thornhill, Montem, Ashmount, Yerbury, and St Mary Magdelene) had qualified from the 1st round to play in two groups of four.

The opening 4-3 thriller between St Johns Highbury Vale and Yerbury set the tone for Group X where 18 goals would be scored across the 6 matches, St Johns winning all three of their games to win the group whilst Montem qualified as runners up.

In Group Y, Ashmount qualified as winners, going undefeated in the group. The real drama came in the match between St Mary’s and St Mary Magdelene, with both teams going into their final match with identical records. It wasn’t until the second half that two goals for St Mary’s banished the spectre of s deciding penalty shoot-out, as they qualified for the semi-finals as runners-up.

St Johns controlled most of their semi-final winning 2-0 whilst Ashmount needed extra time to defeat a resilient Montem 2-1.

The final was played competitively but with great sporting spirit, St Johns taking a 2-0 lead, the second an excellent team goal but Ashmount got a goal back with a great individual strike and almost created a scoring chance in the dying seconds of the match. However the game was to remain 2-1, St John’s collecting the Trophy.

“The attitude and performance of all the schools that took part this week was excellent” commented Michael MacNeill, Football Development Manager. “The quality of football played on the finals days in particular, was really great to watch.”
