15 schools gathered on Tuesday, 26th September, for the first day of the Primary Schools Cup at Market Road Pitches, which is run by the Islington Football Development Partnership (Islington Council, GLL and Arsenal in The Community) and the Health & Wellbeing Team.

180 players enjoyed good weather as they played matches in leagues of five teams. St Mary Magdelene and Thornhill would secure qualification for Friday’s finals, winning all four of their matches to secure top spot in their groups, Thornhill scoring 18 goals in the process without conceding any. Robert Blair secured top spot in Group C on goal difference. In the last game of the day, despite being under pressure from Canonbury, Grafton scored the only goal of the game to leapfrog their opponents in the table and dramatically secure their place in Friday’s finals as the best runner-up, only edging out Pakeman by the difference of one goal.

“it was a busy morning with lots of matches and some really good football played. We had even more teams this year and if we get many more we may have to move to three days of heats next year to accommodate everyone,” commented Michael MacNeill, Football Development Manager.

Thursday, 28th September, had the second heat of matches that featured 12 more schools. The top 8 schools from the two days will play out the final stages on Friday morning.
