One of the most respected blood cancer charities in London is celebrating its 20th anniversary by hosting a large scale donor registration drive at the annual Hoopsfix All-Star Classic event on 5th June. The one-day basketball showcase, which is run by British Basketball website Hoopsfix.com will host the ACLT donor registration drive in the main sports hall.
Returning for it's third year, the event is the ultimate showcase of British basketball talent and culture, with a focus on giving back to the game. 20 of the best under 17's in the UK will take to the court first, followed by an under 19 all star game.
The donor drive will also run as a patient appeal for the #Match4Tommy campaign. Earlier this year ACLT launched the #Match4Tommy to find a matched stem cell donor for 4 years old Tommy Simpson. Within weeks of its launch, the campaign secured 4,500 individuals to join the UK Stem Cell Register to help save Tommy's life. Tommy was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), after being admitted to hospital a few days before Christmas.
Darren Pope, General Manager of Brixton Recreation Centre said "It is great for us to be supporting such a worthwhile cause. When we met Orin and Beverley (founders of ACLT), we immediately wanted to help by introducing them to an event where many people would be intersted in helping their cause. It is also quick and easy to join the register as all potential donors need to do is fill in a form and give a quick cheek swab".
