Better’s Clapham Leisure Centre hosted a diving Masterclass for St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School, in Lockington Road, led by Olympian Tom Daley on Tuesday 7th November 2017.
Tom, the current World Champion, provided technical diving instruction to the class’ advanced swimmers. Following the Masterclass, Tom answered questions asked by the pupils and those sent in previously via social media. This Q&A session was also streamed live over Facebook and Instagram.
This special visit occurred after Clapham Leisure Centre’s staff, led by Swim Lead Lucy Ives, recorded the highest course numbers for the Tom Daley Diving Academy Splash Down courses.
Tom Daley commented, “I’m really excited to be here [Clapham Leisure Centre] and meet some of the local children.”
When asked what advice he would give to children thinking of taking up diving, Tom said “There are lots of locations available, you don’t need a pool with diving boards. You can come to a pool like here at Clapham Leisure Centre, where you’re learning stuff off poolside, learning the basics, and then when you get to a certain level you can transfer to somewhere with diving boards.”
GLL, the charitable social enterprise that operates Better leisure centres, in partnership with Tom Daley, created the Academy with the aim of exposing as many individuals as possible to diving, regardless of age and ability.
The Splash Down courses provide children with the diving fundamentals required to be an Olympic champion. The pupils gain vital experience, skills, and confidence to develop their diving technique from the side of the pool. The Academy also supports the identification and development of young talented divers.
