On Saturday 28th May, Canons Leisure Centre played host venue for the Merton Voluntary Service Council’s (MVSC) Let’s Celebrate Healthy Schools event, a celebration of the Healthy Schools project.

The initiative is funded by Public Health England with the aim being to increase health and well-being in Mitcham schools for pupils and staff, as well as addressing the health and well-being gap between the East and West of the borough.

Over the past 2 years, 20 local schools in Mitcham have benefited from a menu of health related activities/services (funded by LBM Public Health and managed by Mitcham Town Community Trust and East Merton Learning Together Trust). The event brought together children/young people and their families and showcased the work of healthy schools programme providers, fun activities and increased awareness of the positive health related activities that can be accessed by the community.

The event saw young people and adults attend and take part in a true family fun day. Canons Leisure Centre organised taster sessions in Dance Aerobics and Group Cycling, as well as inviting delivery partners Fulham FC and Reach & Teach to run football and basketball taster sessions respectively. Other activities included Smoothie bike, BMX track, Inflatable slide and sumo suits activities, exercise taster sessions delivered by and much more.

Mayor of Merton Brenda Fraser and Cllr Caroline Cooper-Marbiah were in attendance. The event was supported by Mitcham Town Community Trust, MVSC, East Mitcham Learning Together Trust and Jeremiah Project.
