Merton
Merton Council and GLL are committed to providing high quality sport and leisure facilities today and in the future. Together we are increasing the range of recreation and sporting activities for all the family to enjoy in a pleasant and restful environment. Merton and GLL have worked together for a number of years to deliver improved facilities within the borough’s leisure centres. The centres in Mitcham, Morden and Wimbledon provide a variety of recreational activity programmes and opportunities for us all to exercise, stay healthy and have fun.
Since the contract was signed, Wimbledon Leisure Centre has benefited from an upgrade to the Health and Fitness area, all the windows and skylight roof over the gym have been replaced and the opening of Spa London, the result of a £1.5m investment, which brings a unique offering to the leisure users of Wimbledon. Canons Leisure Centre has seen 2 floodlit multi use games areas at the rear of the centre providing space for 6 a side football and other games. Since the commencement of the new contract the Council has invested in Morden Park Pools by recovering the roof, and replacing all heating pipework. The Council and GLL continue to invest in Morden Park Pools while considering a long term affordable solution. Following the great success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we will continue to place great emphasis on making our services accessible to the whole community so that everyone can maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay physically active leading to a lasting legacy post games.
GLL is working with London Leisure College to create employment opportunities for young people in the borough and ensure that we build a workforce that meets the aspirations of future generations.
