Monday 1st May marked the re-launch of Preston’s two leisure centres, following the announcement of the transfer of the facilities and the Council’s Sport and Health team to new operator, GLL- the UK’s largest leisure charitable social enterprise.

Representatives from GLL and Preston City Council were present at Fulwood Leisure Centre to mark the official launch, which will see GLL invest £2million across the two facilities, operating under its customer brand, Better.

It will be ‘business as usual’ for customers of both facilities from day one with users noticing the first improvements later this year. In the coming months staff and customers will be asked for their thoughts about what improvements they would like to see made across the two centres.

Neil Fairhurst, Director of Customer Services for Preston City Council, attended the launch alongside Andy King, Regional Director, GLL to mark the launch of the new Better centres.

He said:

“This is an exciting time for Preston. GLL are one of the best leisure providers in the UK and this landmark deal ensures investment into the future of Preston’s popular and well-used leisure centres.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers who have supported Westview and Fulwood leisure centres over the years. We are confident that you are in good hands with GLL and look forward to seeing the improvements they bring.”

Andy King of GLL commented:

“We are delighted to welcome both West View and Fulwood Leisure Centres, their staff and customers into the Better family. As the UK’s largest leisure charitable social enterprise, we strive to ensure that affordable and accessible opportunities are available for the whole community to pursue a healthier, more active lifestyle.

“We are committed to improving leisure facilities in Preston, implementing a long-term investment to provide a sustainable service for generations to come - ensuring more people can be more active, more often. We’re really keen to find out what our customers and staff would like to see us invest in to improve the centres, as well as sharing our own thoughts and look forward to getting ideas and suggestion from them over the coming months.”

An agreement was announced in 2016 for the transfer of ownership of the West View Leisure Centre and Fulwood Leisure Centre buildings, with GLL acquiring both centres on a 125-year lease - offering a range of leisure activities including gyms, swimming pools, fitness classes and sports facilities. Under the agreement, GLL has retained both centres’ existing staff.
