GETTING TO KNOW OUR MEMBERS

Ryan Walker, General Manager of Moss Side Leisure Centre, recently sat down with long term member Ella Szelachowski to ask some questions and learn her story.

WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TO USE MOSS SIDE LEISURE CENTRE?

It’s my local centre and I love it. My children learnt to swim here about 34 years ago. The atmosphere when I’m here is amazing.

 

WHAT FACILITIES DO YOU USE AT THE CENTRE?

Swimming, gym, Yoga, Pilates and Core Conditioning

HAS EXERCISE IMPROVED YOUR LIFESTYLE IN ANYWAY?

Yes of course, I’m fitter now than I was in my 40’s, both mentally and physically.

WHAT MADE YOU START EXCERCISING?

I learnt to swim when I was 60 and I just did it. It’s my favourite. I swim 5 times a week and I swim like I’m in my 40’s, breast stroke is boring, front crawl for me! I was then advised by a fitness instructor at the centre to start using the gym to help strengthen my bones, so I did. Then I naturally progressed onto fitness classes. My favourite is Yoga, I’d recommend it to anyone.

DO YOU HAVE A LIFE MOTO?

Do unto others what you like to be done to yourself.

WHATS YOUR FAVOURITE HEALTHY MEAL?

Poached salmon fillet, French beans, peas and broad beans

 

WHATS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?

Haggis, mashed sweet potato and sour cucumber

WHAT IS SOMETHING CANT BE TAUGHT BUT LEARNT WITH AGE?

Wisdom, appreciation and living in the moment

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT EXERCICING BUT THEY ARE RELUCTANT OR   NERVOUS?

Give it a go! You have nothing to lose, you will find enjoyment especially at Moss Side Leisure Centre.

WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

Learning to swim at 60. I’m not really a person who sets goals in life, I just try to maintain a healthy state of body and mind and that’s what really makes me happy.

 

SO WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

Nothing, I’m happy doing what I do. If I can continue doing what I do, bringing people together in the centre by talking and smiling, I’m happy with that.

WHAT STRESSES YOU THE MOST?

Nothing…Bad manners and rudeness test my patience though!

AND WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BEST WAY TO RELIEVE STRESS?

Going to Yoga, it really relaxes the body and mind. I’m a very relaxed person now and exercising is a major contributing factor.

AND FINALLY, HOW MUCH OF GROWING UP SHAPED YOU INTO WHOM YOU ARE TODAY?

Fitness and exercising was only done in school and I hated it. There was no pool in my town. Exercise was just a word to me. I   never envisaged being as active as I am today.
