Maggie Cunningham, Training Assessor at Better, Splash Leisure Centre has just been given the prestigious honour of being made President of the Cornwall Amateur Swimming Association!
Maggie, who joined Splash Leisure pool in 1982, has been awarded this honour for her outstanding work across Cornwall as a swim coach in the last 23 years. During this time, Maggie has had a number of positions including Head Coach of Bude Sharks Swimming Club and before retiring in 2015 Maggie successfully saw many swimmers achieve county, regional and national swims levels.
Additionally, Maggie was also asked to coach the Cornish and National swim teams at a competitive level over an 8 year period and made history by moving the Cornish Squad away from the bottom position which was never done before!
Currently on the agenda, Maggie is was working with a young swimmer who, after being taught and coached by Maggie since he was 6 years old, has gained a place on the Great Britain Para Squad, he has been to the Nationals for the past two years and this year attended his first international competition and reached the final in 200 free style!
As a member of the team at Better, Splash Leisure pool, Maggie has taught all levels of swimmers and now successfully heads up the Swim for Fitness (Swim Fit) programme which is regularly attended by a number of adult swimmers in the community.
Maggie started out as a Lifeguard at Splash Leisure Pool and has taken on every role within the centre; Duty Officer, Swim Teacher, Swim Coach, Water Aerobics Instructor and is now enjoying the role of TA (Trainer Assessor) training and teaching our lifeguards at the centre and new lifeguards joining the team.
Maggie has been a role model to many young lifeguards and we thank her for her commitment and wish her all the very best in her year of presidency.
