Welcome our first Better regional newsletter for Bath and North East Somerset, keeping you up to date with all the goings on at your local Better leisure centre.

Sport Relief 2016

Better were an official Sponsor of Sport Relief 2016 and over the past few months we have held a range of activities, challenges and events across Bath and North East Sommerset to help raise money for the charity. These included a fancy dress roller skating event, bake sales, charity fitness classes, swimming challenges and spinning challenges. These were in addition to the two main events we held as part of the Sport Relief Games Weekend (18th-20th March).

This took place at Bath SLC and Keynsham LC, with over 100 swimmers taking part locally.

Sport Relief Mile

This was held at Odd Down Sports Ground. Over 300 people registered for the event and ran either the one, three or six mile challenges. We want to say a big thank you to all our customers who made a Sport Relief donation. Your generosity has helped our Better leisure centres to raise over £7,500 for Sport Relief.

Passport 2 Health is our in house exercise referral scheme. This scheme is designed to help break down the physical and/or mental health barriers for people suffering with a range of different health conditions.

The service offers support and guidance within a range of activities across our partnership. For more information please visit your local G.P for a referral or email us at: healthwise.banes@gll.org

Club Spotlight

Every newsletter we’ll cover a club who trains at one of our BANES Better Leisure Centre. In this issue, we look at Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club.

Established more than 60 years ago, Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club is highly regarded in competitive swimming circles, however, it has more to it than competition alone. The Club has swimmers aged 6 to 60 years old. The Club has a great link with Keynsham Leisure Centre’s Better Swim School, especially as some of the teachers also coach for the Club as well.

After attending a trial, swimmers are placed in squad depending on their age and ability. Swimmers in the Junior and Senior Squads who meet the criteria set out by the club, can also be invited to join the Gold Squad, the Club’s top competitive squad. Beyond this the Club is also part of the Aquae Sulis Performance Swimming Club and City of Bristol Swimming Club Networks, giving opportunities for talented swimmers to train at the highest level.

Commonwealth Games medallist Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, who trains at Bath University, is an active member of Keynsham Swimming Club attending the Club when she can and taking part in the occasional competition as a Keynsham swimmer.

The Club also offers training opportunities for the older swimmer via its Masters Squad, which meets on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings.

If you are interested in joining Keynsham Swimming Club, please contact Thelia Beament on thea.beament@keynshamswimming.club
