Following outreach at local schools and huge interest in the #INNER STRENGTH Girls Together Project at Eastern Leisure Centre, the first 10 week programme has come to an end.

40 young ladies from Eastern High and St Illtyd’s completed a 10 week programme of Health, Wellbeing and Fitness. Each session involved one hour of physical activity delivered by Nikki Lewis and a one hour workshop led by Change Grow Live a local charity helping the girls to discuss the issues that they face in everyday life tackling issues such as body image and confidence among others.

The project was a partnership project supported by Girls Together, Sport Cardiff, Full Circle, Youth Services, Public Health Wales, Street Games UsGirls initiative, Cardiff Met, and of course Better Eastern. The success of the programme has been demonstrated in the attendances to the sessions on a weekly basis, the amount of girls who have now joined the centre as members, the increase in their physical activity levels, and the development of the girl’s confidence throughout the programme.

The project was such a success that round two is about to commence at Eastern (with a lot of interest already) and it will also roll out to other centres in Cardiff.

Four of the attendees from the initial programme have been identified as Sport Wales Young Ambassadors and will be getting more involved in future projects.
