On Saturday 20th of November, Greenwich’s London Youth Games (LYG) season got off and running with the traditional Parliament Hill Cross Country. There are two events, one for each gender and it was our girls who stole the limelight with a remarkably consistent high standard which saw them place 5th in the Under 13s, 10th in Under 15s and 8th in Under 17s for an overall team finish of 8th out of the 33 boroughs. Meanwhile the boys were competitive in a team finish of 22nd with the best category being the Under 13s who were 10th. All results are available online.

The Cross Country teams were selected from the Greenwich Secondary School Cross Country race at Avery Hill, previous borough races such as Mini Marathon, local clubs, Park Runs and for schools out of the borough with Greenwich residents or for runners who missed the trial race on data proven recommendations.

 Highlights:

  • Iris Williams 4th place in Under 13 girls
  • Under 13 girls 5th
  • Emer Tynan 6th finish in Under 15 girls
  • Girls overall 8th
  • 35 runners across the U13, U15 and U17 categories

At the event was great to see Greenwich Triton’s athletes competing with Cambridge Harrier’s runners.  For any LYG participants that took part who were not affiliated to a club those were the main options.

We had some impressive individual performances, Iris William’s 4th place out of 205 runners in the Under 13 girls, Emer Tynan’s 6th place out of 177 runners in the Under 15 girls and then Harry Smith  had the honour of best placed boy after beating 175 runners to finish 31st in the very competitive Under 13 boys race.

Overall we had 35 runners with good representation across the 6 secondary school races despite a few drop outs in the week building up to the event but thankfully we had athletes on standby too.

The Better Sport Development team organise the borough’s entries into open events at London Youth Games. After a few disrupted years through Covid 19 we are keen to get back out and compete against the capitals most talented youngsters in over 30 sports. It was a solid start at the Cross Country but this is only the beginning. The live calendar is viewable via Google Sheets and any questions can be directed to Borough Team Organiser Daniel.Bank@GLL.ORG.

Thank you to everyone involved in the Cross Country.  Attention now turns to the LYG Cricket in late February. Our squad is being chosen by the Greenwich Cricket Partnership based at Hervey Road and performances at borough training.
