New weekly Walking Football sessions for over 50's are taking place at Kensington Leisure Centre beginning on January 18th.

The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, QPR and GLL are working together to provide this free sporting opportunity for local residents. These sessions will give people the chance to reconnect with playing football as many might not have played for years.

Walking Football as the name suggests is played at walking pace, so no running is allowed at all. One other major difference from traditional 5 –a-side football is that it’s classed as a non-contact sport. Although tackling is allowed in the game but it must be done with no contact.

There are many benefits from playing walking football, these include:

  • Keeps you active - as the name suggests, you're constantly moving as well as having fun
  • Improves stamina - participating in weekly activity means you can keep going for longer
  • Healthier heart - activity lowers your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar and decreases risks of diabetes type 2
  • Better balance - you'll find working on one leg, kicking the ball will help with your balance
  • Meet new friends - get to know your community and build a camaraderie with people from a number of different backgrounds.

Walking football is a fun and entertaining way to bring people together. Both the companionship and excitement of the game is helping large numbers of people across the UK feel less isolated while keeping them fit.

Sessions take place 11.30am-12.30pm every Tuesday (starting 18th January) at Kensington Leisure Centre and are free for participants. All you need for walking football is comfortable sports clothing and trainers. If you have gloves or shin pads, please feel to bring them along but it is not a necessity.
