At the start of 2018, GLL/Better partnered with Cancer Research UK (CRUK) to fundraise for the charity. Cancer Research UK is a national cancer research and awareness charity. Since 2002, the charity has funded research aiming to prevention and cure cancer whilst also working with other organisations to create supporting strategy and policies.

Over the past year, all Lambeth Leisure Centres supported the campaign raising a huge £3,277.54, all of which was donated to CRUK. Some of the centres fundraising activities and events are featured below.

Bake sales were organised by Brixton Recreation Centre, Clapham Leisure Centre, Ferndale Community Sports Centre, Streatham Ice & Leisure Centre, and West Norwood Health & Leisure Centre. Cakes and treats were baked or purchased by the staff with many different types (including vegan) available. Coffee mornings also ran once a week for customers and passers-by at Ferndale and Archbishops Park.

One off fitness classes were organised, usually themed for the time of year, with all the entry fee proceeds being donated to CRUK. This occurred across numerous centres, but Streatham must get a special mention for the 3 hour Mass Danceathon which was attended by 40 people. Standard weekly fitness classes and other sporting sessions within the centres also donated the entire sessions’ entry fees to the charity on occasion. A Fright Night Disco was held on Streatham’s ice rink during October in support of Stand Up to Cancer.

The Great Row was a non-competitive, indoor rowing machine challenge that took place in March. Better Leisure Centres supported the event by allowing free access to non-members to use the rowing machines to achieve their pledged distances. The donations raised by this campaign went directly to CRUK and hence were not included in the £3,277.54 total.

In addition to the £3,277.54, Brixton, Clapham, Streatham, and West Norwood ran Swimathon - raising £14,572 for Swimathon’s two charities: CRUK and Marie Curie. Swimathon events encourages members of the public  to take part in swimming challenges, bringing together swimmers of all ages and abilities and spreading benefits of swimming, whilst raising  funds for some of the UK’s most deserving charities.

We would like to thank every customer and staff member who donated, purchased a charity band/pin, or joined in with one of our events.
