West Norwood resident and Ghanaian weightlifter, Forrester Osei, has been nominated for the African Exclusive Man of the Year (EMY) in the Sports Category.
The EMY Awards is widely recognised throughout Africa, celebrating the achievements of distinguished men every year across local industry, community, culture, and public service. Dozens of men from all ages and walks of life have been honoured for their abilities, initiatives, and contributions to society. The EMY Sports Award is awarded to the most prolific and consistent sports personality of that year.
Forrester, 30, competes in the men’s 94kg category and has achieved a huge amount of success during his weightlifting career; notably, being crowned the 2019 African Champion and a 6th place finish at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in 2017. These results have put him on track to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games.
Forrester trains at the local weightlifting club within Better Brixton Recreation Centre, as well as Better Wimbledon Leisure Centre in the neighbouring borough of Merton. He is a great ambassador for the sport and also coaches the younger, aspiring athletes at the clubs.
Better also support Forrester with a gym membership and a financial award through the GLL Sport Foundation, in partnership with Lambeth Council’s Gifted and Talented Programme.
Forrester expressed his gratitude for the nomination and support, “Although I live in Lambeth, I relate heavily to my African background and so I am super proud to be nominated. Receiving this recognition, and the support provided by the GLL Sport Foundation, really encourages me to step up my game and focus on my goal of competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.”
The 2019 Awards Ceremony will be hosted in Forrester’s home country of Ghana at the Luxury Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City Accra on Saturday 22nd June, 2019.
