Lambeth GLL Sport Foundation March Athlete of the Month and February Update
GLL Sport Foundation (GSF), in partnership with Lambeth Council’s Gifted and Talented Programme, supports talented athletes who live, train, or are educated in the borough. 2019/20 saw 108 athletes funded with £59,700 worth of support. All the athletes are local and many use Better facilities, whether that is for their sports sessions or their strength & conditioning and fitness training.
ATHLETE OF THE MONTH – MARCH 2020
We are pleased to announce that the March Athlete of the Month winner is Adam Adaman (Judo) who won gold at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) championships, victorious in all five of his fights. This means that he has been selected for the European University Games in Belgrade in the summer – a fantastic achievement.

INTERNATIONAL:
Forrester Osei (Olympic Weightlifting) kicked off his Olympic 2020 qualification bid with an excellent silver medal at the Olympics Solidarity Championship in Uzbekistan. This event marks his first of the year whereby he accumulated the points necessary for Olympics qualification. This result helps propel Forrester to 1st place in the continental rankings and a similar performance at the African Championships in April would confirm his qualification for the Olympics.
Kace Bartley (Squash) (right) started the calendar year with an impressive 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, and 11-6) victory in the first round of the Edinburgh Sports Club Open 2020. Unfortunately, round 2 lose 0-3 (7-11, 6-11, and 6-11) but managed to give an excellent account of herself against an opponent who is ranked top 30 in the world.
NATIONAL:
Dylan Holicka (Ice Hockey) has been selected as part of U15 South East Conference Ice Hockey Team after performing well with his team winning the Winter Classics tournament in Sheffield. These performances mean he has also been selected as part of U15 England Ice Hockey Team for a European tournament in April 2020. Dylan has also been selected as part of 11-17 GB Ball Hockey Team and will travel to Slovakia with the team to participate in the World Championship in July 2020 – a very successful start to 2020.
With the indoor athletics season coming to a close, many of our athletes wanted to race preparation for the upcoming outdoor season. Jonathon Ilori (Athletics) leapt to 16.06m securing seasons best and an impressive 4th place finish in British Indoor Championships held at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow where he was competing against the very best in the country. The South of England AA U20 / Senior Championships at Lee Valley was a popular competition amongst our athletes with Mallory Cluley (Athletics) (left) achieving seasons bests in both the 60m and 60m Hurdles securing a fantastic silver medal in the latter. Similarly, Ore Adamson (Athletics) also earnt herself a podium finish in the Long Jump where she jumped out to a seasons best of 5.83m securing 2nd place in the process. Risqat Fabunmi-Alade (Athletics) finished an excellent 5th place in the 60m and Tom Nichols (Athletics) won a superb bronze in the High Jump with a seasons best of 2.00m. Columba Blango (Athletics) topped a phenomenal effort from the Lambeth GSF athletes with a gold medal in the 400m revealing some outstanding performances at the Lee Valley competition.
Hector Jones (Fencing) won gold in the U12s South West Epee Championships thereby qualifying for the British Youth Champs in May which he has also qualified in for foil. Hector also came 5th at an elite epee competition in the u12 which has elevated himself in the England fencing u14 ranking list for 2021 to a fantastic 3rd. Sabrina Jones (Fencing) finished an impressive 6th in the 11-17 South West Epee Championships meaning she also qualified for British Youth Champs as they are taking the top 8 in her category. Sabrina is also working towards qualification for the England U17 cadet team which she has three years to qualify for. Hal Jones (Fencing) won gold in the u18 men’s category meaning all three siblings will be competing at British Youth Championships in May. In terms of upcoming competitions, Hector and Sabrina have received a bye for the qualifying round of the Laser Run World Championships; therefore will be going to the final which are taking place in Weiden, Germany. The European championships are in Barcelona in July and the qualifier for that is in June so looking like a very busy summer for the ever successful Jones family.
