Streatham Ice rink was given the green light by the government to open its doors on Saturday 15th August. The popular ice venue saw many regular keen skaters returning as well as skaters travelling from further afield just wanting to get on the ice as their local ice rinks were still closed. All public skate sessions were fully booked through the BETTER app which has received positive feedback from many new and returning skaters.
The venue was also in for another surprise when a Streatham ice hockey player proposed to his figure skater girlfriend on the ice of the rink where they first met. Tony had been planning to propose to his girlfriend Nadine at the ice rink but his plans were delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Tony said “We originally met here over a year and a half ago and I had it in my mind that I would propose in the place where we first met. So I had it arranged and then obviously Covid happened and I was a little bit disheartened. Then I got an email a couple of days ago which said the rink is back…I had to just get a few people in line and give me a heads up on when it was actually going to reopen”
Tony skated up to his partner and slid on to one knee while still moving towards her with a ring box in hand. Nadine said yes, prompting cheers and celebration from the other skaters. Nadine said “It was very overwhelming, all of our friends, our communities, our families, it was nice to have everybody here. “This is where we fell in love, where we met, so it’s the perfect place really.”
The joy of the first skaters was captured by Sky TV who dropped in during the morning.https://www.google.com/amp/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/coronavirus-lockdown-theatres-casinos-and-bowling-alleys-reopen-as-more-beauty-treatments-resume-12049649
