The 13th annual Better Club Games took place on Wednesday 10 October at the Copper Box Arena and London Aquatics Centre on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Over 700 participants took part in the games across 22 partnerships. Rugby, who travelled the furthest, took 20 people down to the Copper Box Arena and competed in badminton, darts, and short mat bowls. We also competed in the timed swim, but did not send a mixed team therefore did not receive points. Former professional boxer, John Conteh MBE opened the ceremony, with Perri Shakes-Drayton – a GLL Sport Foundation athlete – also in attendance.

The games were held on the 10th October, which was World Mental Health Day. A team from Mind attended, as well as the Alzheimer’s Society, and GLL’s official charity partner for 2018, Cancer Research UK. Over £500 was raised on the day through a raffle and merchandise sale for CRUK.

This year’s event was the largest yet, with walking football and netball now part of the competition – these events took place the Friday prior at Ferndale Community Sports Centre.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich retained their title for another year with a whopping 919 points; Epsom and Ewell came second, and Reigate and Banstead third place. Rugby finished 16th overall with 218 points. It was a great day and we’d like to thank everyone involved with the organisation, as well as our wonderful team from The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Centre.
