Each year Rugby Borough Council, The Rugby Advertiser and Rugby FM team up to recognize and reward the boroughs most dedicated and talented sports people. This years awards were presented at the Benn Hall on Wednesday 27th February. During the event a number of awards were presented, which included; awards for talented athletes who are excelling in their sport, awards for coaches who train future champions and transform lives inspiring an active nation, awards for volunteers who give up countless hours of their own time to engage with the community, and awards for a number of teams who had success in their sport.

A number of awards handed out during the event were sponsored by the GLL Sports Foundation, which sponsors over 16,000 athletes in 75 areas of the UK.

The Deputy Managing Director of GLL, Peter Bundey, attended the event to present the awards and praised the dedicated sports people in the room. The event was also attended by Joe Rahm -Regional Director, Matt Perren-Head of Service, Nicola Boyd-Partnership Manager, Phil Hanrahan-Health Manager and Jay Partridge-Community Sports Officer.

The special guest for the night was Vicky Macqueen, who gave an inspirational speech about her journey to becoming an international Rugby player for England. Since retiring, Vicky has helped to develop children’s Rugby, and received a British Empire Medal for her services to sport. 

The ‘Get Active’ award is sponsored by Public Health Warwickshire. The winner of the 2018 award was Dave Pestridge.

Dave was nominated by Healthwise Rugby, having improved his health and well being through physical activity on the exercise referral scheme.

Dave said, “It’s really great to be recognised for the work I’ve put in over the last 12 months, not only attending the leisure centre, but having the courage to step through the doors following my referral. I will continue my fitness programme with the support of the staff at Better”.
