The Queenswood girls team travelled up to Bolton last Friday to face the winners from each of the other regions from across the country for National Schools Tennis finals. Queenswood faced Rainford School from the North first where Maia started off the singles with a convincing 6-0 win. Queenswood debutant Leyla and Jess continued the winning streak with 2 more convincing wins. Tiziana finished off the singles with the first tie break of the tournament and overcoming her opponent.

Up next were Leicester Grammar school and the team went into the doubles needing 1 win after a 3-1 lead. Immy and Leyla secured the doubles meaning that we would be neck and neck with Prior Park on the final day who had also won their first 2 matches. The girls, who were supported by a fantastic U13 team all weekend, were ready to go and defend their title. Up first was Leyla who fought through a tough match to take it 7-6 in a tie break. Immy was up next, coming back from injury this weekend, played their Number 3 and put a fantastic returning performance to win 6-1. Jess Matthews, serving absolute rockets all day, also secured the 3rd singles 6-0 meaning that we needed to take 1 more match from the last 3. Tiaziana was up next for the last singles and went storming ahead 3-0 until Hannah Smith from the opposition put up a good fight. In the end it was 6-6 and Hannah had made a great come back to put them back in the fight. Tiziana did incredibly well to hold her serve and managed to cross the line winning the final singles in a tie break. The team then ran on to the court to congratulate the team.

It was a fantastic team performance and the girls were extremely professional in their preparation for the weekend. This particular group of girls’ are becoming one of Queenswood’s most successful sporting teams ever after winning National titles now in U13 & U15 age group as well as Bronze medal at the World Champs earlier in the year. As well as the success this weekend becoming National Champs for a second year in a row and success throughout the year Queenswood have secured their UK No. 1 school for girls’ tennis status for a second year in a row which will show in the rankings produced by the LTA at the end of year. An accolade the school and the girls are hugely proud of.
