Highbury Leisure Centre’s gym & fitness studio spaces and health suite will be re-opening on Monday 10th December following September’s fire.

GLL (which operates the facility under the Better brand) and Islington Council have been working in partnership to return the facilities to public use within 12 weeks of the serious fire which closed the building on September 25th.

Facilities available will include:

  • A fully-functional gym - incorporating Studio 1
  • Studio 2 available for fitness classes
  • Revised timetable for fitness classes (see website for details)
  • Hot showers, toilets
  • Changing rooms
  • Sauna and steam room
  • Reception

Fitness class bookings will be available online in the coming days. Further updates will be available at: www.better.org.uk/highbury

The pool hall will be rebuilt, but remains closed while we carry out preparations to allow for planning of this work.

Cllr Janet Burgess, Islington Council’s deputy leader and executive member for health and social care, said: “The reopening is great news for Islington. For the large and vibrant community of regular users of the leisure centre, the fire was a real blow. But I have been impressed with the determination of staff to get so many activities up and running less than three months on, and very pleased to see what they have achieved with the studio and gym. I’m glad that Highbury Leisure Centre is back on the map and helping many residents to get fit, and stay fit, once again.”

Mark Sesnan, MD of GLL said: “We’d like to thank customers for their patience and for supporting Highbury Leisure Centre and its staff as we get your facilities back up and running.  It’s a tribute to the experience and commitment of the local staff that we have been able to re-open the centre within 12 weeks of the fire.”
