Health Walks and Dementia Services

North Kesteven Social Strollers 

North Kesteven Social Strollers is a free health walk scheme, and available to all. We have 18 regular health walks, all across the district. All walks are between 30-90 minutes and are led by friendly, experienced and qualified volunteer walk leaders. We also offer a shorter walk of 10-30 minutes once a week.

Walking can enhance both your happiness and health as walking is a proven stress reliever and mood improver. Joining the walking groups is an easy way to learn more about your local area whilst meeting new friends - so why not join one of our walks today! All our walks offer the chance to socialise, and after most walks refreshments are available.

 

What is a health walk?

A health walk is a purposeful, brisk walk undertaken on a regular basis. It can include any walk which has been designed and carried out for a purpose of improving an individual’s health. NK Social Strollers is a free health walk scheme open to everyone. Why not join us for a walk in your local area?

 

Stepping Up Walks

For those who really love their walking or would like to challenge themselves to go that little bit further, from March 2019 we will be hosting a 6-7 mile walks on the first Saturday of every month, starting on 2 March 2019. Each walk with be lead by a health walk leader and a dedicated back marker, so no one is left behind. What are the benefits of a health walk?

There are many benefits of joining your local health walk including, meeting new friends, getting to know your local area and improving your health. Below is a short summary of how walking can improve your health, by helping to:

  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Reduce stress
  • Improve sleep patterns
  • Reduce the risk of various illnesses and diseases

 

Dementia and Friendship Hub

The dementia and friendship hub is a suitable and safe environment for anyone feeling isolated or lonely.

Our hubs are also dementia friendly and provide opportunities to socialise, become more active and have fun, as well as source information about further opportunities and other services available in the local area. Friendship hubs are free to attend and refreshments are available.

Sensory Strolls

Join us for an enjoyable stroll around Whisby Nature Park, which is designed to stimulate the senses and celebrate the outdoors. Refreshments are available in the boardwalk café afterwards, providing the opportunity to socialise with other members of the group.

North Hykeham Monday Health Walk

When: Monday Mornings

Meet point: North Kesteven Sport Centre, North Hykeham, LN6 9AX

Time: 10:00

Walk leader: Ian Kendrick

Frequency: Weekly

This walk is a gentle paced walk and generally takes place around Millennium Green Lakes. The walks will last between 30 minutes and 1 hour. Tea and Coffee is also available following the walk at the North Kesteven Sports Centre, providing a great opportunity to socialise.

 

Whisby Health Walk for the Visually Impaired

When: Monday Mornings (Alternate)

Meet point: The Whisby Natural World Centre, LN6 9BW

Time: 10:30

Walk leader: Brian Smith

Frequency: Weekly

This walk is led by Brian Smith, in partnership with the Lincolnshire Blind Society. Please contact Brian on 01522 685541 for more information about the group.  We have many different routes which range between 1 and 3 miles, the route taken is dependent upon the walkers attending, and the group walk for approximately an hour. The group always stay for a coffee in the Boardwalk cafe at the Natural World Centre after the walk. 


Branston Health Walk

When: Monday Mornings (alternate weeks)

Meet point: Branston Cafe, Rectory Lane, Branston, LN4 1NA

Time: 11:30

Walk leader: Nick Grimshaw, Paul Frodsham, Karen Wood, David Scott

Frequency: This walk is every other Wednesday morning

This walk consists of walk routes around Branston and surrounding villages, and will last approximately an hour. The walk will finish back at the Branston cafe, perfect to have a drink after your health walk! 


Heighington Health Walk

When: Monday Mornings (alternate weeks)

Meet point: Jubilee Hall High Street, Heighington, LN4 1JS

Time: 11:30

Walk leader: Nick Grimshaw, Paul Frodsham, Karen Wood, David Scott

Frequency: This walk is every other Wednesday morning

This walk consists of walk routes around Heighington and surrounding villages, and will last approximately an hour. The walk will finish back at the The Butcher & Beast Pub (next door to Jubilee Hall), perfect to have a drink after your health walk!

 

Heckington Health Walk

When: Tuesday Mornings

Meet point: Heckington Sports and Social Club, NG34 9RX

Time: 10:30

Walk leader: Various

Frequency: Weekly

This walk has various different routes within the village varying in length. The group is split into two: a gentle paced walk of up to 30 minutes, and Strollers who walk for up to an hour and a half. Both walks always finish back at the Sports pavilion within the hour so you can enjoy a chat over tea and biscuits! 


Leasingham Health Walk

When: Tuesday Mornings

Meet point: The Village Hall, Leasingham, NG34 8LB

Time: 11:00

Walk leader: Dave Stodart  / Joan Lawton

Frequency: Weekly

This walk has various different routes, keeping to footpaths within the village. The walk always finishes around 12, just in time for lunch. 



 

Sleaford Health Walk

When: Tuesday

Meet point: National Centre for Arts and Crafts, NG34 7TW

Time: 13:10

Walk leader: Shirley Thompson and Dick Fairhead

Frequency: Weekly

This walk includes various routes around Sleaford village, and generally lasts around 60 minutes. There are free refreshments available after the walk, in the cafe at the National Centre


Whisby Life Trail Health Walk

When: Wednesday

Meet point: The Whisby Natural World Centre, LN6 9BW

Time: 11:30

Walk leader: Helen Farmer / Morag Robinson / Tony Pennington

Frequency: Weekly

Car Parking: £1 Nov-Feb £2 March to October

We have many different routes around the nature park, and the route taken is dependent upon the walkers attending. The group usually walk for an hour before enjoying coffee in the Boardwalk cafe at the Natural World Centre. There is also an option to walk for up to 30 minutes on this walk. 


Ruskington Health Walk

When: Wednesday Afternoons

Meet Point: Ruskington All Saints Parish Church, NG34 9EL

Time: 13.30

Walk leader: Various

Frequency: Weekly

The walks generally last about an hour and depending on the weather and ground conditions, the routes may vary.

If it is dry underfoot then the routes may include the surrounding countryside but if conditions are not suitable then the routes generally follow footpaths and passages within the village. 


Waddington Health Walk

When: Thursday mornings

Where: Waddington Village Hall, LN5 9NX

Time: 10:00

Frequency: Weekly

Leader: Andy, Paul, Trish and Ray

Walkers meet at Waddington village hall and may use routes in Waddington or surrounding areas. Car travel may be required and car sharing will be used where possible. The walk can last an hour to an hour and a half and refreshments vary depending on walk location.


Sleaford Health Walk

When: Thursday Afternoons

Meet Point: Sleaford Leisure centre, Eastbanks, Sleaford

Time: 13:30

Walk leader: Richard Massey, Peter Clarke, Gini Smith

Frequency: Weekly

This group takes place every week and there are many routes available within Sleaford and surrounding areas which are incorporated within the health walk. The walk is approximately an hour, and free refreshments are available inside the leisure centre after the walk. 


Skellingthorpe Health Walk

When: Thursday Mornings

Meet Point: Skellingthorpe Community Centre, LN6 5UT

Time: 11:00

Walk leader: Nick Grimshaw

Frequency: Weekly

This group takes place every week and there are many routes available utilising the Sustrans cycle track, the Old Wood, public footpaths and village streets. Every week this group have a coffee stop at the Daisy Made Cafe, Badger & Bee or even Doddington Hall cafe to enhance the very active social side of the group. The walk is about an hour.

 

Metheringham Health Walk

When: Friday Mornings

Meet point: Metheringham Sports Pavilion, LN4 3DE

Time: 10:00

Walk leader: Barbara Ramsden, Janet Wheater, Chris Hill, Roger Bulled

Frequency: Weekly

This walk has various different routes within the village varying in length between 60-90 minutes. We also like to walk into and through neighbouring villages which are slightly longer routes. Refreshments including tea, coffee and biscuits are available at the end of the walk at the Metheringham Sports Pavilion, as part of the walk. 

 

Navenby Health Walk

When: Friday

Meet Point: The Venue, LN5 0JJ

Time: 10:15

Walk Leader: Andy, Paul, Trish and Ray

Frequency: Weekly

Walkers meet at the venue and may use routes in Navenby or surrounding areas. Car travel may be required and car sharing will be used where possible. The walk can last an hour to an hour and a half with refreshments either part way on the route or at a local pub for food and drink.

North Hykeham health walkers enjoy extended walks around the lakes at the Whisby Natural World Centre, as well as shorter walks around the Millennium lakes in North Hykeham. The group always enjoy refreshments after the walk. Walks are up to an hour.

 

Dementia Hubs 

Our hubs are also dementia friendly and provide opportunities to socialise, become more active and have fun, as well as source information about further opportunities and other services available in the local area. Friendship hubs are free to attend and refreshments are available.

Time: 10:00 – 12:00

Frequency: Once a month
