Is this the first time you are using a leisure centre in a while? Don’t worry! At Better we know this can be a daunting prospect. We have trained staff on hand to answer any questions you may have and give you any extra support you might need, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
Our leisure centres are here for everyone and you can use most facilities whether you’re a member or not. If you decide to start coming regularly, then signing up to a membership will save you money.
The gym is the only facility you need a membership for before you can use it as you will need to have an induction, where we will show you how to use all the equipment correctly.
Entering a leisure centre
The first thing you will see when you enter through the front doors will be a reception desk and some barriers. The barriers are there for customer safety, to make sure we are monitoring who is in the building.
All our leisure centres are accessible if you use a wheelchair, and there are many other facilities we have in place to make access easier. You can find more information on accessibility on each leisure centre’s webpage.
The reception team are here to book you in for your activity. Reception can also help with any other information you might need. You can book online or via our Better app for smart phones. You can pay in cash, by card or online. If you are a member with the Better app who is going for a swim, gym or attending an exercise class you can Scan and Enter without checking in with reception.
Once you are checked in for your activity, you will be able to go through the barriers.
Planning to bring a bag or a buggy for your child?
All of our leisure centres have lockers* where you can store your clothes and other possessions while you take part in your activity. These are either in the changing rooms or nearby.
Depending on the leisure centre and whether you are in a wet-side or dry-side changing room the lockers will either take a £1 coin, 30p token or a padlock. You can buy tokens and padlocks at reception.

It is important to note that we cannot be held accountable for criminal acts committed by members of the public and will not accept responsibility for the loss, damage or theft of personal belongings anywhere in the centre or other external areas. This also means we cannot accept responsibility for any items stolen, even if it is from a locked locker. We suggest that you do not bring items of value with you when you visit and remind you that you cannot leave items in lockers when the centre is closed.
Many of our leisure centres also have areas to securely leave buggies. When entering the centre please ask reception to know where the buggy park is.
