Camden First Time User Guide- Gym

Our gyms provide a huge variety of equipment, allowing you to get exactly what you want from your workout. Our fitness instructors are also on hand to put together your own personal workout programme, if you’d like them to. Workout programmes are free of charge if you’re a pre-paid member.

Refocus sessions are available to you at any time, where our fitness instructors can change your programme to suit your progress. Varying your workout and keeping it challenging will mean you’re more likely to stick to it and reach your goals.

Attending our gym for the first time

You need to sign up to either a Pay As You Go or Pre-paid membership to use the gym, but you can have a free trial if you’d like to try out the gym before committing to a membership. (Add link – free day pass) Before using the gym you'll also need to complete an induction, where our fitness instructors can show you how to use all of the equipment safely.

Anyone 16 years old, can use one of our gyms. However we also operate a junior gym at set times for 11-17 year olds. Junior gym times can be found on the timetable on the leisure centre webpage.

Planning your workout – when to go and what to wear

Most of our gyms are open all day, from early in the morning until late in the evening. For timings at your local centre, check the timetable on your leisure centre webpage.

Once you’re a member, you don’t need to book for the gym; just come whenever you choose. Most gyms tend to be busier around lunchtime and between 5.30 - 7pm, so it’s best to avoid those times if you’re looking for a quieter workout.

We advise you to wear comfortable clothes and trainers when using the gyms (no flip flops or sandals). Water fountains are available at all gyms; however please do bring your own bottle.

Getting changed and finding the gym

If you’d like to get changed, there will be signs to the changing areas once you’ve passed through the Reception barriers. If you are not sure where to go, our staff will be happy help you.

The gym will also be signposted from reception.

Areas within the gym

Our gyms are separated into various areas: the weights area, stretch area, resistance machines and cardio machines.

Cardio machines (which raise your heart rate) such as rowers, bikes, cross trainers and treadmills can be used to improve your overall fitness.

Resistance machines and weights can be used to improve your overall strength. All of our weights and weight machines start at a very light weight, so no matter how strong you are, you’ll be safe to use them.
