THIS GIRL CAN

Here at Better, we’re proud to support the This Girl Can campaign developed by Sport England. It’s a celebration of women up and down the country who enjoy getting active in their own way.

Launched in 2015, the This Girl Can campaign has already inspired over 3 million women nationwide to be more active. And it doesn't stop there.

Now looking to tackle the inequalities in exercise between women from different social groups, we're pleased to continue our support of Sport England and their latest campaign, Fit Got Real.

Research carried out by Sport England reveals a huge
difference in the number of men and women playing
sport. And it's not because females don't want to get
active. Millions of women and girls are afraid to exercise
because of fear of what others might think of their
bodies, ability or skill. Further insights by Sport England
highlight that barriers to entry can also be economical
and based on a woman's ethnic background.

According to Sport England’s latest “Active Lives Adults Survey”, women in lower paid, routine jobs are almost twice as likely to be inactive compared with women in managerial and senior roles. The survey also identified significant differences in activity levels amongst women of different ethnicities. Here are some of their key findings:-

  • South Asian background (36%) and black women (29.4%) are more likely to be inactive than white British women (25.3%)
  • South Asian women (36.0%) are more likely to be inactive than South Asian men (27.5%)
  • More women in lower paid, routine and manual professions (33.5%) are inactive than men in the same social groups (31.8%)
  • 2,258,400 women in lower paid, routine and manual professions (33.5%) are inactive
  • Overall, women are more likely to be inactive than men (26.4% vs 23.8%)

If you feel like you can relate to some of this, then you’re in the right hands. Our aim is to help eliminate some of these barriers, so that women feel comfortable in the environment they’re exercising in.
