On Thursday 2nd May 2024 we held our annual awards night for athletes in Belfast who received a 2024-25 GLL Sport Foundation Award. This was a fantastic event held in Belfast City Hall to celebrate the indredible achievements of every individual athlete.

On the night our host Pete Snodden invited Lady Mary Peters up on stage for a short Q&A, discussing her personal sporting career and how the Mary Peters trust supports athletes reach their goals. This lead onto Pete conducting a panel discussion with Michaela Walsh and Lucy McGonigle, both are elite female athletes competitng at the top level within boxing and crossfit. The night finished off with Pete being joined on staged by Academy Awaerd winner James Martin. James was in the final days of his marathon relay preparations for Sunday 5th May, competiting with a group in support of Mencap and raising awareness of the benefits of physical activity for those with learning disabilities to lead healthier and happier lives.

The GLL Sport Foundation is the largest independant athelete award programme in the Uk, supporting athletes competiting at national and international levels. The programme provides support for the athletes through financial bursaries, UK wide memberships, physiotherapy and more.

This year Belfast has 140 supported athletes on the programme, ranging from 11-40 years old across 33 different sports. More than 50% of these athletes are under 21 years old and 76% receive no other funding, highlighting the importance of this programme to aid in continuing training and meeting their potential.

Congratulations again to all the athletes who received an award this year and we look forward to following your sporting journey!
