Empowering the Next Generation of Lifesavers: Introducing the Rookie Lifeguard Program!
Attention all parents in Cardiff! We are thrilled to announce that our top-notch swimming pools are gearing up to unveil an incredible opportunity for your little ones this March! Get ready for our brand new Rookie Lifeguard Programme - specially designed to equip your children with the vital skills they need to stay safe and confident in and around the water.
We understand that nothing is more important to you than the safety and well-being of your kids, which is why in partnership with the RLSS UK, we’ve pulled out all the stops to create a programme that is both fun and educational.
What is Rookie Lifeguard?
RLSS UK’s Rookie Lifeguard programme teaches various lifesaving and rescue activities in order to give children the skills they need to be confident in the pool or the sea and enjoy water safely, whether in shallow or deeper water.
There are 3 stages to the Rookie Lifeguard Programme - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each stage has been divided into three levels and each stage runs roughly for 10 weeks. Following the completion of each stage, Rookie Lifeguards can receive a certificate, badge and sticker to mark their progress in their own Progress Book.
Upon completion of Bronze Stages 1, 2 and 3, Rookie Lifeguards should be able to complete a variety of tasks, some are listed below:
- Enter shallow water safely and confidently and wade
- Tread water and signal for help
- Swim continuously in clothing for 50m
Upon completion of Silver Stages 1, 2 and 3 Rookie Lifeguards should be able to complete a variety of tasks, some are listed below:
- Swim continuously in clothing for 200m on your front and back
- Demonstrate a reaching rescue
- Throw a buoyant aid to a casualty 8m away
Upon completion of Gold Stages 1, 2 and 3 Rookies should be able to complete a variety of tasks, some are listed below:
- Coil and throw a rope to a casualty and pull to the side
- Swim 400m continuously in clothing
- Demonstrate Lifesaving Backstroke, Sidestroke, Breaststroke or Front Crawl
The Rookie programme is aimed at 8 to 12 year olds who can swim at least 25m competently and unaided.

Wednesday 18:30-19:30 – Maindy Centre
Friday 18:30-19:30 – Star Hub
