The 2023 Wheelchair Rugby European Championship is set to take place in Cardiff, and two of our leisure centres have been selected as training venues for the tournament; Pentwyn Leisure Centre and Llanishen Leisure Centre. We’re excited to welcome the athletes to prepare for the high-stakes matches ahead. We’re sure sports fans across Wales are eagerly anticipating the start of the tournament so here’s some more information on what’s to come;

This 3-7 May 2023, the Principality Stadium will showcase the thrills, spills and heart-pumping action of wheelchair rugby! Host nation and Paralympic gold medallists Great Britain will face Europe’s top teams in clashes, collisions and historic rivalries! Taking place on one of the world’s most famous sporting stages, teams will compete for qualification spaces for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and the title of European Champion. Get ready for rugby as you’ve never seen it!

What can spectators expect?

Wheelchair rugby is an intense, high-impact and full-contact Paralympic sport – ticketholders can expect big hits and athlete collisions in a fierce and high energy contest! Yes, the ball is round – this is because it’s easier for athletes with impairments to catch and throw, and ensure the game flows more easily with more predictable bounces! The sport was originally nicknamed ‘murderball’ which gives you an idea of the intensity you can expect…

For the very first time, the Principality Stadium will showcase the sport and will be transformed into a stadium within a stadium, to create an intense arena atmosphere combined with the thrill of the famous home of Welsh rugby.

How can I grab tickets?

Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster! Prices for day tickets start from £10 for adults and under-16s can experience the action for just £1. For superfans who don’t want to miss a minute of the action, multi-day ticket bundles offer great value for money.

Ticketholders for the grand finale of the event on Sunday 7th July will also bear witness to the very first wheelchair rugby Judgement Day! Two regional Welsh teams will go head-to-head to battle it out as soon as the first match of the day ends, rolling to pitch and tipping off in a day of back-to-back clashes and smashes.
