Great Cumbrian Run 2023 Round Up
Sunday 1st October saw the 39th edition of The Great Cumbrian Run. The 2023 event saw a brand new route. This route incorporated well liked aspects of the new course like the rural villages and roads as well as a grandstand finish at The Sheepmpount Athletics Stadium. The new route started at the newly refurbished Sands Centre and took a different route through the city centre so that it now includes passing the cathedral and running all the way down the pedestrianised area so that supporters get multiple opportunities to watch their family and friends.
This year saw more than 850 entries in The Great Cumbrian Run, with 674 finishing the half marathon distance. The overall winner was Nathan Postill, of Border Harriers Athletics Club. Nathan completed the thirteen point two miles in one hour eleven minutes and fifty three seconds. With Maciej Treciak in a distant second with a time of 1 hour 19 minutes and 26 seconds, closely followed by Christopher Huitson just over 1 minute later finishing in 1 hour 26 minutes and 29 seconds. The female winner was Imogen Nicole Bungay of Elswick Harriers with a time of 1 hour 37 minutes and 17 seconds. In second place a little over 3 minutes later was Fiona Todd of Border Harriers in a time of 1 hour 30 minutes and 55 seconds. In a close third place following just over thirty seconds later in a time of 1 hour 31 minutes and t30 seconds was Chloe Kendal.
As part of the Great Cumbrian Run 2023 there we not one but two fun runs take place for the first time. Both started at The Sand Centre, the tradition one mile fun run saw over 50 children some with their parents head straight for The Sheepmpount Athletics Stadium. The new 3.1 mile Fun Run saw junior competitors follow the first three miles of the half marathon course. Both runs finished at the same place as the half marathon to give the fun runners the same race finish experience as the those that complete the Great Cumbrian Run.
The event was considered a success with some areas identified for improvement for the 40th running of the event in 2024. Entries are now open and we look forward to seeing more athletes take part next year.
