Hillingdon International Women’s Day

GLL leisure centres across Hillingdon came together on International Women's Day to honour and empower women from all walks of life.  On Monday 4th March, GLL were honoured to be invited to present alongside Hillingdon Council at Hillingdon’s International Women’s Days presentation at the Beck Theatre. GLL presented to 100s of residents, promoting the fantastic work GLL does in Hillingdon including:

  • Multiple women’s only sessions running across GLL centres in Hillingdon (which has seen positive growth between 2022-2023)
  • Sponsor 17 local female athletes competing at a range of different levels (aged 10-40)
  • Over 50% of Hillingdon’s Healthwise programme members are women
  • Workforce plan showing a equal representation of women in the local GLL workforce to the local population

On Friday the 8th of March, International Women’s Day, a series of free events were organized exclusively for women, aiming to promote health, well-being, and community spirit.

‘Highgrove Pool and Fitness Centre’ and ‘Botwell Green Sports and Leisure Centre’ both kicked off the day with women-only functional classes, designed to inspire women to embrace fitness in a supportive and encouraging environment. Led by experienced instructors; participants engaged in exercises that targeted strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. The atmosphere was filled with positivity and camaraderie as women of all ages and fitness levels came together to sweat, smile, and get active.

Meanwhile, at ‘Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex’, women of all ages and backgrounds enjoyed taking part in aqua aerobics sessions providing a fun, low-impact workout. As the sessions concluded, our fantastic female staff joined the other women in the activity room where an impressive display of cakes and pastries were available; giving a great opportunity for the women to converse and relax with a hot drink and tasty treat.

Pat (Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex member): “I’ve had such a wonderful time today and it’s great to see the local leisure centre getting involved in International Women’s Day”.

These events not only provided an opportunity for women to prioritise their health and well-being but also served as a platform for building connections and fostering a sense of belonging within the community. By facilitating spaces where women feel welcomed, supported, and celebrated; the leisure centres of Hillingdon continue to demonstrate their commitment to gender equality and empowerment.

As the sessions came to a close, customers told us they were leaving feeling more uplifted, empowered and appreciated. International Women's Day in Hillingdon was not just a celebration; it was a testament to the resilience, diversity, and spirit of all women within GLL and the Hillingdon community.
