Beyond the books project launches at Eltham Library!
October marked the start of an exciting new project that Better Greenwich Sports Development are delivering in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich and London Sport. Beyond the Books is a new session taking place at Eltham Library, for girls aged 11-16 years old. This project will consist of two parts, one focusing on improving physical fitness and the other being educational, featuring a coding masterclasses and IT based workshops.
The girls taking part will begin the hour and a half session by doing 45 minutes of coding using specialist Lego kits teaching valuable skills in STEM subjects. This is an area where females are significantly underrepresented with just 34% of the STEM workplace being women. These sessions have been design to introduce technology based skills in a fun, interactive and welcoming environment, with the aim being to inspire the girls to take up learning a subject that they may not have considered before.
The second half of the session will see the girls take part in a silent disco converting those Monday blues into Monday Boogies. A qualified dance instructor will show the participants some new moves whilst they listen to some of their favourite tunes. Silent discos are a fun exciting way to get moving without even realising that you are exercising your body.
