Club Games 2026!
Team Rugby returned home celebrating a historic achievement after securing its first-ever Better Club Games title at the Better Club Games 2026, an event that brought together older adults from across the country to celebrate active ageing, friendly competition and community spirit.
The annual games provide participants with the opportunity to challenge themselves, meet new people and demonstrate that staying active can have a positive impact on both physical and mental wellbeing. Competitors from leisure centres nationwide took part in a variety of sporting and recreational activities, creating an inspiring atmosphere of encouragement, determination and camaraderie throughout the event.
This year's event was hosted by Pam Radley and featured several high-profile guests who highlighted the importance of active ageing and community participation. Among those in attendance were GLL CEO Peter Bundey, Cheryl Baker, Ambassador for the 20th Anniversary Club Games, Dr Hussain from Age UK, and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ashley Hamilton. Their support helped shine a spotlight on the vital role that sport, physical activity and social connection play in improving the quality of life for older adults.
For Team Rugby, the event proved to be one of the most successful in the centre's history. The standout achievement came in the Short Mat Bowls competition, where the team delivered an outstanding performance to claim the championship title and secure Rugby's first-ever Better Club Games victory.
Success did not stop there. Team Rugby also achieved an impressive second-place finish in Dominoes and a highly creditable fourth place in Darts, demonstrating the breadth of talent and commitment across the squad. In addition, Rugby participants proudly represented the centre in the Timed Cycle, Timed Swim and Pickleball events, embracing the competitive spirit of the games while showcasing determination, teamwork and resilience.
The success reflects not only the dedication of the competitors but also the inclusive and welcoming environment that encourages older adults to remain active, engaged and connected within their local community. Taking part in events such as the Better Club Games provides far more than sporting opportunities, helping participants build friendships, improve confidence and maintain healthy lifestyles.
Winning Rugby's first Club Games title is a significant milestone and a testament to the effort put in by everyone involved. The achievement now provides a strong foundation for future participation, with ambitions already turning towards the Better Club Games 2027.
Looking ahead, Team Rugby hopes to expand its involvement by entering competitors in every event next year. By increasing participation across the board, the centre aims to strengthen its chances of challenging for an overall top-three finish. With London boroughs traditionally dominating the podium places, Rugby's competitors will be hoping to continue their rise and perhaps upset the established order.
A special thank you must also go to the staff whose encouragement, organisation and support played a crucial role in making the event such a success. Their commitment helps create opportunities for older adults to take part in activities that enhance wellbeing, build confidence and foster a real sense of community.
As the celebrations continue, everyone involved can take tremendous pride in what has been achieved. Team Rugby's historic victory in Short Mat Bowls, combined with strong performances across multiple events, marks a memorable chapter in the centre's sporting history and sets the stage for an exciting return to the Better Club Games in 2027.
Congratulations to all competitors, volunteers and staff involved in this fantastic achievement. Here's to even greater success next year!
