A new café in Carterton marked its launch day in style as it celebrated the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning run by Macmillan Cancer Support.
Approximately 80 local residents visited the new Better Café, which is situated within Carterton Leisure Centre and took part in the charity coffee morning, raising £250 through the sale of hot drinks, cakes, doughnuts and other sweet treats.
The launch of the café is part of the redevelopment of Carterton Leisure Centre and has created six jobs. It is run by West Oxfordshire District Council’s leisure operator GLL Better.
Cllr Michele Mead, Cabinet member for Health and Leisure at West Oxfordshire District Council and Mayor of Carterton, said: “The café is a wonderful addition to the leisure centre and will be an excellent facility for the growing number of residents from across the District who will be visiting once the new building is complete.
“It was also well timed to coincide with the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning which was a hugely enjoyable event and I look forward to visiting the café again soon.”
The café is being run as a social enterprise and works with like-minded suppliers such as Café Direct who supply Fair Trade coffee and Life Water, a British company that funds well projects across the globe.
An additional 2p per hot drink sold will go towards funding the GLL Sports Foundation, a charity that helps support talented young athletes in Oxfordshire and beyond.
Phase Two of Carterton Leisure Centre will include new changing rooms, a four court badminton sports hall and an indoor ‘extreme zone’ trampoline park. It is on track to be completed by Christmas with recruitment for about 60 new jobs ongoing.
Centre Manager Lou Cable said: “People are popping into the café just for lunch or after using the gym or pool as it’s a great social space. We are also taking the opportunity to show off the plans for what Phase Two will look like which is very exciting.”
The plans are part of a 10-year, £9.3m, investment programme secured by the Council with GLL Better, its leisure services contractor.
