The Preston Community Team aim to provide a range of community based cycling opportunities in Preston to support more people to cycle more often for health, leisure and travel.

We work with a range of partner organisations to offer a growing programme of cycle rides and events which aim to engage local communities and support people to improve their cycling skills and confidence. There are rides to cater for everyone, from beginners to more experienced riders.

Want to cycle the Guild Wheel but don’t feel confident on your own? Join us for a Guild Wheel Cycle Challenge. In it together, there will be ladies of all abilities taking up the challenge!

This event is brought to you by the Preston Sport and Health Team in partnership with the Preston What Women Project and UCLan Sports Arena.

The event aims to provide ladies with the opportunity to participate in a non-competitive mass participation 21 mile cycle ride round Preston's Guild Wheel on Saturday 7th October 2017.

Please note this is not a led ride but you will be provided a well signed cycle route and there will be friendly female ride marshals cycling the route to support you. The ride marshals will be there to assist you with any questions, directions, mechanicals, advice etc...

All riders will receive a goodie bag which will include a What Women Guild Wheel Challenge T-Shirt.

Ladies Guild Wheel Cycle Challenge - The Route

The ride will follow the Guild Wheel, a 21 mile circular route that takes you around the City of Preston, through different landscapes on paths shared between pedestrians and cyclists with some sections on minor roads.

Starting at UCLan Sports Arena, the ride will follow the Guild Wheel anticlockwise along the Ribble Link Canal before heading towards Preston Docklands and Marina. From Preston Docklands the route will follow the River Ribble to the historic Avenham Park on the edge of the City Centre. From Avenham Park the route will continue west along the River Ribble past riverside meadows and ancient woodland to Brockholes Nature Reserve. Here you will climb up a steep narrow path from the Nature Reserve and continue through the grassland and woodland. The route will then take you round the north of the city on shared use paths and minor roads passing Broughton Business Enterprise College and Preston Grasshoppers before returning to the finish at UCLan Sports Arena.

The route is undulating with a few challenging hills along the way.

Distance:

  • 21 mile circular route on shared paths and minor roads

How is the route marked: 

  • The Guild Wheel forms part of the National Cycle Network and is Route 622. There blue National Cycle Network Signs providing directions around the route.
  • There will also be additional temporary cycle event signs and arrows along the route, you will be advised on the morning what colour sign to look out for and follow.
  • A number of friendly female cycle marshals will be cycling the route. These ride marshals are experienced riders and/or female cycle ride leaders and will be there to provide directions, assistance, advice and support.
  • It is advised to study the route and carry a route card, this will be provided once you book your ticket.

Ladies Guild Wheel Challenge - Event Information

Times:

  • Registration: 7am-8.30am
  • Start time: riders must start between 8am and 9am 
  • Finish Time: all riders must have returned to the Sports Arena by 3pm.

 What do I need to do before the day?

  •  Ensure your bike is in a road worthy condition
  • Study the route
  • Get some practice rides in

 What do I need to do on the day?

  •  You will need to register when you arrive, registration will be open from 7am. At registration you collect your rider number as well as any other necessary information.
  • Start times are between 8am and 9am, you should choose your own start time but a maximum of 10 are able to start every 3 minutes.
  • Slower riders should start early to account for extra time required to complete the challenge.
  • All riders must return to the finish point at the Sports Arena and sign back in by no later than 3pm.

 The Finish:

  • All riders must return to the finish and sign in. You will then receive your event goodie bag. 

Post Ride Refreshments:

  • All riders will receive a piece of cake and a hot or cold drink at the finish as part of their entry into the event.
  • The Final Whistle Café at UCLan Sports Arena will also be open serving a range of hot/cold food and drinks that can be purchased throughout the day.

 Are There Food Stops?

  •  The event will not provide food or water stops round the route.
  • There are cafes located on the route at Preston Docklands and Marina, Avenham Park, Brockholes, Blue Bell Way & Preston Grasshoppers, where hot/cold drinks and food can be purchased.

 Parking:

  • Car Parking available at UCLan Sports Arena

 Toilets:

  • Toilets will be available at UCLan Sports Arena.
  • There will also be changing and locker facilities available.

 How old do I have to be:

  • Minimum age of 11 years on the day of the event
  • Rides aged 17 and under must provide a completed parental consent form with their entry (this will be emailed to with an entry form following payment).
  • All riders aged 11-15 years must be accompanied by adult or parent guardian throughout the duration of the event

 How to Enter:

Ladies Guild Wheel Challenge - TERMS & CONDITIONS

Please read these Terms and Conditions carefully and make sure that you understand them before placing an entry for the Ladies Guild Wheel Cycle Challenge. You should understand that by submitting your entry form (“Entry Form”), you agree to be bound by these Terms.

By submitting my Entry Form, I hereby declare that:

  1. I understand and agree that I participate in the Event entirely at my own risk, that I must rely on my own ability in dealing with all hazards, and that I must conduct myself in a manner that is safe for myself and all others throughout the duration of the Event.
  2. I acknowledge that Event entry is personal to me and that I may not exchange it with, sell it to, or transfer it to any other person.
  3. I acknowledge that participation in the Event is physically strenuous and demanding. I am aware of the nature of the Event and associated medical and physical risks involved. I further certify that I am physically capable of participating in the Event and am capable of completing the Event within the cut off time (as decided by the Event Organiser). I will only participate in the Event if I am fit enough to do so.
  4. I will be at least 11 years old on the date of the Event and am entering my own details, or am the parent or legal guardian of a child and am entering the Event and agreeing to the Terms on their behalf.
  5. I understand that entries for participants under the age of 18 will only be accepted with a completed parental consent form and children aged 11 to 15 years must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian throughout the duration of the Event.
  6. During my participation in the Event I will cycle with care and attention and will abide by the UK Highway Code and any other rules stipulated by the Event Organiser. I am aware that when riding on a public highway and shared path the function of any marshals and signage is only to indicate direction and that I must decide whether the movement is safe.
  7. I am aware that the Guild Wheel is a shared space and I will ride in a manner which is safe to myself and other users of the Guild Wheel.
  8. I agree and understand that I must report to event registration pre and post event to sign in/out.
  9. I agree to read the Rider Briefing Pack before participating in this event (the Rider Briefing Pack will be e-mailed to you prior to the event).
  10. If I have any medical condition/s, including allergies, which the Event Organiser or Event medical advisors might need to be aware of, I confirm that I have provided details of these on my Entry Form.
  11. I accept full liability and responsibility for any medical expenses incurred as a result of training for and/or participating in the Event.
  12. I accept that GLL, the Event sponsors, organisers, officials, medical advisers and any person involved in the organisation of the Event are not liable for any injury or illness that I may suffer as a result of my participation in the Event, whether prior to, during or subsequent to the Event.
  13. Whilst GLL takes every care with the staging of the Event, I accept that I must make all reasonable precautions for the safeguarding of my person and of my property during my participation in the Event. I further acknowledge that personal accident and personal items insurance is my responsibility.
  14. I accept that it is my responsibility to provide and use a road-worthy bicycle and suitable helmet.
  15. I accept that GLL reserve the right to amend the Event format or cancel the Event due to health and safety reasons, including storm, rain, inclement weather, winds or any other act of god conditions. Where possible should the Event be cancelled due to health and safety reasons, GLL will endeavour to reschedule to a later date and/or refunds will be provided.
  16. I understand that confirmed entry to the Event is dependent on a fully and accurately completed Entry Form; and receipt of payment to cover my Entry Fee before the event closing date. If either of these conditions is not fulfilled then my entry may not be valid nor accepted, and I will not be eligible to take part in the Event.
  17. Through my completion and submission of the Entry Form, I am committing to paying for my Event entry via the means as instructed on the Website.
  18. I accept that all correspondence and enquiries about the Event shall be directed to the relevant Event Organiser.
  19. I understand that photographs/videos taken at the event may be used by GLL for publicity purposes in accordance with GLL guidelines.
  20. I understand that the information I have provided (including but not limited to name, age, gender) will be kept by GLL and will be used for the purposes of statistical analysis to evaluate the event.
  21. I understand I will be entered into GLL’s database to receive further service updates, unless you have opted out on the Entry Form.
  22. All decisions and rulings by GLL, its employees and its agents are considered final.
  23. GLL reserves the right to vary these Terms effective immediately upon posting on the website.Limitation of Liability – your attention is particularly drawn to this section
  24. I hereby release GLL, it’s employees and owners, and event partners or their officials from any claims, demands and causes of action arising from my participation in this cycle Event. I agree to abide by the conditions of use as stated in this document and the term and conditions of entering the event.
  25. I fully understand that should I injure as a result of participation that I hereby release GLL from any liability now or in the future

Breeze Rides - Ladies Only

 

There are a range of fun, social, local bike rides for women organised and led by volunteer Breeze Champions within and around Preston.

Breeze rides are a great introduction to cycling for new and returning cyclists. There are rides of various levels and distances.

Rides are delivered at a speed that suits everyone, and they may often include a café stop either at the start/finish or along the route.

This is a Ride Social group providing a monthly ride around the Guild Wheel. The rides are 22 miles in distance and will include a short break Brockholes Nature Reserve. The rides will start from UCLan Sports Arena outside the Final Whistle Café.

Guild Wheel cycle path

The cycle path was built by Lancashire County Council with the support of Preston City Council (and significant help from volunteers) to leave a lasting legacy to Preston Guild 2012.

 

Preston on Wheels sessions

The Preston on Wheels project provides a wide range of weekly cycle rides. The rides cater for everyone, from beginners to more experienced riders and anyone with a disability or differing need.

 

Wheels for All

Wheels for All offers a great opportunity to use the wide range of adapted cycles which are perfectly suited for adults with a differing need or disability.

Who is it for?

The selection of adapted cycles are suitable for:

  • Wheels for all offers a great opportunity to use the wide range of adapted cycles, which are perfectly suited for adults with a differing need or disability.
  • Frail and older participants.
  • Those with varying learning and physical disabilities.
  • Weight management clients.
  • Any adult wishing to improve their activity levels.
  • Tricycles, hand cycles, side by sides and wheelchair accessible cycles available.

Health on Wheels

Using Cycling as a gateway to a healthier, more active lifestyle. These guided rides are ideal for the returning cyclist or anyone recovering from injury or ill health. All routes are predominantly traffic free and delivered in beautiful greem spaces around Preston's parks.

Smoothie bike hire

The bikes can be used by nearly everyone and makes a tasty drink into the bargain. They are excellent to use at a range of events and make a great crowd puller.

We have two Smoothie Bikes to choose from - a small bike suitable for children and a standard sized bike suitable for teenagers and adults.
