Cycling

The Velodrome track at Palmer Park Leisure centre and stadium is a 460m tarmacadam surface that wraps around our athletics track. The Velodrome is over looked by a 780 seat stand which is great for event days. The Velodrome is enclosed by a British cycling approved gate/fence and can be used by both fixed wheel and road bikes.

Learn to Cycle

Learn to Ride

Also known as "After School Cycling" Club - these sessions take place on Monday and Thursday evenings 4pm-5pm, and are for children aged anywhere between 2yrs - 18 years. These are beginner sessions, aiming to teach the basics of bike safety and technique. Games, drills and races are all used in order to grow confidence and teach this important life skill.

Cycling Skills

An intermediate level coached session that develops the basic skills further, introducing elements of track racing and competition, aimed at those that can ride, but are not yet ready to join a cycling club. These sessions take place on Wednesdays 4pm-5pm and are aimed at anyone over the age of 6.

Inclusive Cycling

Join us on a Wednesday mornings at 11am - 12 noon for this inclusive and relaxed session with a qualified cycling coach. With a mixture of specialist accessible bikes, we can accommodate a wide range of abilities and people with different needs. Participants will require to have a carer or their own supervision when attending these session. For participants ages 4+.

Advanced Cycling

Advanced coached cycling sessions run every Tuesday and Thursday 8:15pm - 9.45pm. These sessions are open to all, 14 yrs+ , for proficient cyclists looking to learn how to ride competitively on the outdoor velodrome. Road bikes are used in sessions that take place during the Winter Season (September –March). During the summer season (April –August) fixed wheel bike training takes place. Entry into the summer (fixed wheel) sessions, require riders to pass the SQT accreditation. Cycling Clubs

Our resident Cycling Club, Palmer Park Velo, are the next step for those that have graduated from the intermediate sessions we run on Wednesday afternoons and want to further their skills and interest in track racing and competition. The club caters for all ages between 8yrs-18yrs and have sessions that run at the below times: 

Mondays

7pm-9pm

Saturdays

9.30am - 1pm

Casual Cycling Sessions

We offer the opportunity to bring your own bike and have a ride around our floodlit velodrome to practice your cycling, in an unstructured session. There are separate sessions for those that wish to bring track (fixed wheel) bikes, and sessions for bikes that have breaks mounted. Sessions are bookable at various times during the week Monday-Sunday, during the morning afternoons or evenings.

The veledrome is available to hire for small and large events with s seating capacity of 760 in the grand stand this is a great location to be holding you events.

FAQs

How can I cycle the velodrome?

  • Taster sessions, skills sessions and casual sessions will be available to allow you to experience our track that can be book via the Better UK App

What should I wear?

  • It is mandatory to wear a cycling helmet. This is included in the cost of a learn to ride or cycling skills session. We recommend the following:

    • Gloves, cycling glasses.
    • Two layers of clothing (preferably close fitting) on your upper body

Can I cycle when pregnant?

  • Cycling carries inherent risks, you should be aware of and accept these risks and are fully responsible for your involvement in this cycling discipline. You must always ride within your own limits and after consultation with your health care professional.

Essential Information

When using the velodrome, we ask that you adhere to the following guidelines:

  • All bookings can be made in advance via the 'Better UK' app, or online here or with us in centre.
  • Use the app to check what times are available. Please note, the csaual cycling sessions will only be bookable at certain times and availability corresponds with that shown on the app.
  • Private coaching is not permissable on the velodrome, without permission of the manager. 
  • For coached sessions you must arrive at least 30 minutes before your session is due to starts
  • Riders must be capable of riding without stabilisers to use the velodrome.
  • Children aged 11 and under must be accompanied by parent / guardian to two children
  • Children aged 12 and over do not require parent / guardian supervision but this is recommended.
  • Children under 18 participating in any sessions e.g. Learn to Ride, Cycling Skills, Casual Cycling and General Taster Sessions must bring a signed Parental/Guardian Consent Form with them to be able to participate in their session.
  • Should the child be participating in a ‘coached’ session the parent/guardian should remain in the area indicated by the coach during the safety briefing and/or follow meeting instructions given
  • Only conventional and adapted bikes for cyclists with disabilities may be ridden. All bikes must have working brakes
  • When cycling at the venue you must wear a top at all times
  • Equipment hire: Taster sessions include bike and helmet hire, all other sessions do not include any equipment (unless otherwise specified)
  • Riders are required to wear helmets and safety equipment while cycling. Where this is not included in the session cost you may hire a helmet from the venue. The helmet must be worn correctly at all times when with a bike. If you wish to bring your own it must meet the current UK safety standard - BS EN 1078:1997
  • Cycling carry inherent risks. You should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for your own actions and involvement. If you're unsure whether you are able to participate in any activity, or if you have any questions concerning our terms and conditions, your booking form or the safety and risk declaration, please ask a member of staff before you partake in cycling at Palmer Park
