SEND Swimming in Hatfield
Hatfield Swim Centre is proud to announce its very own dedicated SEND swimming lessons, offering sessions specifically designed around the individual needs of neurodiverse young people.
The new programme provides a welcoming, inclusive and judgement-free environment where every child can feel safe, supported and that they belong.
Led by STA Level 2 qualified swimming teachers with a passion for inclusion, the SEND lessons have been created with care and understanding. Every child is different, and therefore every swimming journey will look different. Lessons are adapted to suit each swimmer’s abilities, confidence and individual needs, allowing them to progress at their own pace without feeling overwhelmed.
Unlike a traditional swimming lesson, our SEND sessions take a more flexible approach. While lessons still have structure, activities can be adapted depending on how each child is feeling and responding on the day. We recognise that for some children, simply becoming comfortable in the water, building trust with their teacher or enjoying their time in the pool can be a huge achievement.
Creating a calm and comfortable environment is a key part of our programme. Some of our young swimmers can become easily overstimulated by loud noises, sudden sounds and busy surroundings. To help reduce sensory stimulation, our SEND lessons take place during one of the quietest times at the centre.
Tuesday 18:00-18:30pm
18:30-19:00pm
Wednesday 9:00-9:30am
Thursday 18:00-18:30pm
18:30-19:00pm
We also have a range of sensory toys and swimming equipment available throughout our sessions. These help children feel comfortable, engaged and confident while exploring the water.
Our teaching approach focuses on learning through play. Using floats, swimming noodles and sensory resources, we encourage children to explore the water in a way that feels natural to them. As their confidence grows, so does their willingness to engage, learn and develop new skills.
The response from families has already been incredibly positive, with great feedback from parents about our approach and the environment we have created. One of our SEND classes is already completely full, highlighting the demand for dedicated and inclusive swimming provision within our local community, Below is a review from one of our swimmers.
“Absolutely fantastic SEND swimming classes, Mae is amazing with my son providing a no pressure and play based swim lesson, Mae just gets it and Is so Knowledgeable. My son wanted to go back the next day after his swim lesson which speaks volumes. My son has also done 1 to 1 sessions with Elise and Gemma and I couldn’t recommend them enough”
We are incredibly proud to offer a space where children can learn, play and develop their confidence without feeling pressured to fit into a traditional swimming lesson.
At Hatfield Swim Centre, we believe swimming should be accessible to everyone, and we are excited to continue growing our SEND programme and welcoming more families into our community.
