Paddle Courses

Offering accredited and certificated kayaking for adults and children under the watchful eyes of our expert instructors.

Kayaking and canoeing takes place on the Reservoir and the New River. A varied fleet of kayaks and canoes can cater for all sizes and abilities. Courses lead to British Canoeing paddlesports performance awards.

BC One Star

A basic introduction to kayaking on flat water providing you with the fundamental theory and practical knowledge to encourage safe practise whilst paddling. 

Duration: 1 day

BC Two Star

An improvement award that concentrates on an enhanced understanding and development of basic paddle strokes with the introduction of basic rescue techniques. Entry requirement: BC One Star.

Duration: 1 day

These courses do not include the cost of awards or badges, which successful candidates must purchase direct from British Canoeing. Please check with the centre for dates and prices.

All courses are run by suitably qualified staff. The centre is recognised by the Royal Yachting Association, the British Canoeing and the Adventure Activity Licensing Service (licence No. R1032). It is inspected regularly to ensure the highest standards of safety and tuition are maintained.

BC Lifeguard Courses

Learn to provide safety and rescue with our lifeguarding qualifications. We’ll provide a level of knowledge and skill to render First Aid in a range of emergency situations and within a reasonable distance of medical assistance. Our SESA (Swim Event Safety Award) will allow you to work with open water swim events and clubs, and to act as safety support to open water swimmers.

Private Tuition

Course dates not suitable? Want a more flexible option to learn? Need specific coaching to improve?

The West Reservoir Centre offers a personalised, closer style of coaching, through private tuitions where instructors can work precisely on what you need. You can share this time between three people. We cater for a host of disciplines be it: Kayaking, Canoeing or Stand-Up paddle boarding.

The Castle Canoe Club

Castle Canoe Club is a friendly adult canoeing and kayaking club that uses the Centre on Sundays between 10am-1pm throughout the year and Tuesdays between 6-8pm in the summer months (from April to October).

As well as kayak slalom, canoe polo, and skills practice in a wide variety of boats, Castle Canoe Club runs regular trips and social events. They include white water, sea kayaking, and beginner-friendly flat water pub paddles.

 

Anyone interested in joining the club can attend an induction session for £10, which includes a couple of return visits. Full details of their membership and induction please see the club's website.
