West Reservoir Improvements

Over the next 9 months, West Reservoir Centre will be undergoing a series of exciting improvements to upgrade your facilities, enhance accessibility and support local biodiversity. Led by Hackney Council and the Greater London Authority (GLA), these works are designed to make the centre an even better place for you to enjoy — whether you're here for fitness, leisure or simply the peaceful surroundings. 

Shaped by Your Community 

These changes are rooted in the ideas and feedback of local people. In April 2023, Hackney Council launched an 8-week consultation, speaking with 794 residents and visitors to understand what matters most to the Hackney community.  

What's Changing

From 19 May 2025, work began with building a new internal access ramp to improve  movement within the building and we reconfiguring space to create a brand-new workshop area.  

Then, starting in July 2025, phase 2 upgrades will include: 

  • A brand new café to relax and refuel 
  • Modern, flexible changing rooms designed for a variety of users 
  • New reedbeds and wildflower meadows to support local biodiversity 
  • A welcoming new reception area 
  • A beautiful, accessible green space for everyone to enjoy 
  • Expanded open water swimming opportunities 
  • Enriched wildlife habitats 
  • Upgraded landscaping across the site 
  • More cycle parking spaces for eco-friendly access 
  • Two new accessible bridges over the north and south parts of New River 
  • A new walkway on the east side of the reservoir so you can enjoy a full circular route 
  • A new walking and cycling path along the New River

Whilst the work takes place

We’re committed to keeping the centre functional throughout the improvements and we are pleased to confirm that the centre will remain open however, please be aware of the following temporary disruptions whilst the improvements take place:

  • Reduced parking spaces available
  • There will be a new access route (pictured right) to access your outdoor activities (via the main entrance) 
  • Reduced indoor facilities so please come swim ready when attending an activity
  • There will be no access to be able to sunbathe 
  • We’re pleased to confirm that a temporary café will be available so you can still enjoy a drink and a snack after your activity.   

We’re incredibly excited about the future of West Reservoir Centre. These upgrades are much more than buildings — they’re about creating an inclusive, nature-friendly space where everyone can thrive.
