BMX

Beginners and club riders can both enjoy the thrill of the BMX track at Lee Valley VeloPark. Sessions range from riding the berms, learning the basics in our experience sessions, to getting race ready.

BMX CoreStart - Learn to Ride BMX

Session length: 60 minutes 
Price: £15 
Age: 7+ years 
Minimum height: 127cm / 4ft 2ins 
Equipment hire: Gloves £3 

If you've never experienced BMX then this session is for you.Learn basic skills including the ready position and bike handling techniques to help you gain confidence and prepare you for our other BMX sessions. Starting in our skills section, riders will get the chance to progress on to the BMX track as skills develop.

Essential Information for BMX CoreStart - Learn to Ride BMX

  • Bike and helmet hire is included 
  • Gloves must be worn and are available to hire 
  • Arms and legs must be fully covered 
  • Confident riders may get the chance to complete the experience by executing laps of the track

BMX Taster

Session length: 60 minutes 
Price: £15 
Age: 7+ years 
Minimum height: 127cm / 4ft 2in 
Equipment hire: Gloves £3 

Hit the berms in this experience session on the BMX track. Put your skills to the test as you get to grips with this fun sport. 

If you're a competent rider who's comfortable on a BMX bike, this session is for you*. We offer two options for our BMX Taster sessions 7 - 12 years and 12+ years, just book onto the one for you. 

*Please note, participants must be able to ride confidently whilst standing to take part in these sessions. If rider is unable to do this, we recommend attending our CoreStart - Learn to Ride BMX first to develop the skills required.

  • BMX Taster session must be passed before riders can attend Skills sessions and Pay and Ride sessions

Pay and Ride - BMX

Price: £6  |  Family £20 (four people, maximum two adults) 

Equipment hire: Gloves £3  |  Bike with helmet - adult £12 / junior (under 18) £8 

These open sessions are ideal for BMX riders who want to use the track and its features for fun or to practise your skills. Please note, you must have passed a BMX Taster before you can attend a Pay and Ride session. 

If you're a member of a British Cycling BMX club you do not need to attend a BMX Taster, however you'll need to provide a copy of both sides of BC race license or British Cycling dashboard clearly showing the club you are affiliated to as proof of competency, which will be checked and approved by our lead-coach before being allowed on the track. Please email this, along with your Lee Valley membership number, to our general enquires team.

Information for visitors

  • Check anything that may affect your visit to us such as last minute closures to the BMX track.
  • Pay and Ride sessions can be paid for on the day of riding or pre-booked the day before, subject to availability. Family Pay and Ride sessions are only available to book via Reception.

Join our fun, friendly and fitness based women's only BMXercise session that are aimed at those who want an enjoyable experience while improving their confidence, strength and fitness. You'll be amazed at how quickly you can progress. Get ready to fall in love with BMXing!

BMX Skills

Session length: 90 minutes

In this session riders will develop skills in the following areas: 

  • Cornering and different race lines in the berms 
  • Pumping to build speed over rollers and jumps 
  • Manualing and front wheel lift 
  • Basic jumping 
  • Gate starts 
  • Racing and riding close to other riders

Session length: 4 hours with a 30 minute lunchbreak included
Price: £28 
Age: 7 - 16 years old. 
Minimum height: 127cm / 4ft 2in

This session is a follow on from our BMX Thrills and MTB skills or #ClubVPK MTB and BMX sessions, tackling the skills required for the BMX track.Push skills and confidence on the circuit to a new level as previous experience is used to develop new, more advanced techniques.

How do I get to ride the BMX track?

  • BMX is a fun and exhilarating sport enjoyed by millions across the globe and if you've not tried it before, now's your chance! You don't need to have ridden a BMX before but as long as you can ride a bike without stabilisers, are aged 7 or over and a minimum height 127cm / 4ft 2in you can join one of our taster sessions.
  • Skills sessions are also available to help you develop your skills in various areas.

What should I wear?

  • For BMX you must wear a full face cycling helmet and full finger gloves. Legs, upper body and arms must be covered at all times. Flat soled trainers must be worn.
  • We recommend the following:
    • Body armour, knee and elbow pads, cycling glasses.
    • Two layers of clothing on your upper body (preferably fairly close fitting)

​Can I cycle when pregnant?

  • Cycling while pregnant is only permitted on the outside road circuit for health and safety reasons. Cycling carries inherent risks, you should be aware of and accept these risks and are fully responsible for your involvement in this cycling discipline. You must always ride within your own limits and after consultation with your health care professional.

Essential information

  • For coached sessions you must arrive at least 30 minutes before your session is due to start.
  • Riders must be capable of riding without stabilisers to use the BMX track.
  • Minimum height 127cm / 4ft 2in.
  • Children aged 11 and under must be accompanied and supervised at all times by a parent / guardian.
  • Children aged 12 and over do not require parent / guardian supervision however it is strongly recommended.
  • Children under 18 participating in any sessions e.g. General Taster Sessions, Youth Taster Sessions, skills sessions, pay and ride must bring a signed Parental/Guardian Consent Form with them to be able to participate in their session.
  • Should the child be participating in a ‘coached’ session the parent/guardian should remain in the area indicated by the coach during the safety briefing and/or follow meeting instructions given.
  • Riders participating in a BMX taster session are required to wear BMX gloves. Bike and helmet hire is included in taster sessions.
  • Equipment hire: Taster sessions include bike and helmet hire but not gloves, all other sessions do not include any equipment (unless otherwise specified) - you can hire equipment (bike/helmet) from the venue but you will require personal identification and proof of address (utility, bank or other statements must be less than three months old).
  • Riders are required to wear helmets and safety equipment while cycling on any of the four circuits at Lee Valley VeloPark. Where this is not included in the session cost you may hire a helmet from the venue. The helmet must be worn correctly at all times when with a bike. If you wish to bring your own it must meet the current UK safety standard - BS EN 1078:1997.
  • Cycling and other activities available at Lee Valley VeloPark carry inherent risks. You should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for your own actions and involvement. If you're unsure whether you are able to participate in any activity, or if you have any questions concerning our terms and conditions, your booking form or the safety and risk declaration, please ask a member of staff before you enter into a contract or agree to partake in cycling at Lee Valley VeloPark.
