When recreational cyclist and runner Jacob Bright joined our top of the range gym, in July 2024, he was struggling to return to training after a serious hip injury. Following a partial labrum tear in 2023, Jacob faced ongoing hip instability, knee pain, and mobility issues that held him back from the activities he loved.

Working with one of our highly qualified personal trainers, Sean Condon, Jacob began a tailored rehabilitation and strength programme designed to restore stability, mobility and confidence. His goals were clear: to return to pain free running and rebuild hip and core strength.

A tailored approach

Sean and Jacob started their journey with in depth assessments, including mobility testing, biomechanical running analysis, and a review of previous cycling data, the results highlighted asymmetries in hip control and flexibility, as well as a heel strike running pattern that was contributing to knee pain.

Using this data, a progressive rehabilitation plan was created. This combined clinical research based running programmes, hip stability exercises, and functional strength training, all monitored through careful workload progression. The focus was on improving balance, posture, and control through movements such as split squats, hip hinge variations, and plank based core training.

Real results

Within just two months, Jacob saw measurable improvements including a 66% increase in hip mobility, a 26% improvement in hamstring flexibility, and a significant boost in balance and single leg stability. After a year, he was squatting 70kg and running pain free, achieving his goal of a 45 minute 10K.
