Welcome to Better
GLL is the charitable social enterprise that runs your local Better sport, leisure and cultural facilities. We are the largest operator of accessible sports and leisure centres in the UK and proud to be the first UK leisure operator to be awarded the Social Enterprise Mark and the Prime Minister’s Big Society Award.
We are a unique institution established in 1993. Since our formation we have been fully committed to the benefits and advantages of social enterprise. And we’ve trail-blazed new ways of delivering public services by empowering our staff, and through using charitable and cooperative principles.
GLL has many epithets: Charity, Cooperative, Staff Led, Industrial and Provident Society, Society for the Benefit of the Community, Social Enterprise, Leisure Trust, Community Company, all of which help describe our governance and our values. We aim to bring ‘social added value’ to everything we do, along with passion and depth. We seek to be different and use the following core business objectives as a measure of GLL’s success:
Providing excellent customer services and reducing barriers to access
GLL stands for service quality, price, concessions, accessibility and investment into facilities. We support sport and health and encourage people to get active more often.
Developing our people into the best in our industry
We employ locally, run our own Leisure College and Graduate Trainee Scheme and seek to attract and retain the best staff.
Having a strong and successful business
GLL is an exemplary charity and social enterprise with robust business practices, stakeholder governance, adequate reserves and credible forward plans.
Minimising our impact on the environment
We’re constantly working to improve our carbon footprint with micro-generation, intelligent controls, pool covers, efficient appliances as well as recycling and green transport.
The perfect partner
GLL strives to be the perfect partner for local authorities who seek to have ‘depth’ in what they do. We may not be the cheapest in raw price terms, but if accountants were able to properly quantify the ‘social added value’ of our work we are confident we would always offer best value.
GLL very much wants to work with Partners to help deliver a tangible legacy from the Olympics and Paralympics - one that makes a difference to Londoners as well as London sport. We’re hopeful we’ll be given the opportunity to do so.
GLL also wants to develop its role into wider cultural services working in partnership with local authorities. Social Enterprise can provide more sustainable solutions in a stormy financial climate for Libraries, Parks, Play and a whole host of services. There are real opportunities for enhanced services at reduced costs.
Finally, we’d like to thank all our Partners for their help, assistance and loyalty to GLL.”
