Swindon Borough Council and GLL are delighted to announce that the Victorian-era facility will reopen on Monday, 19 January 2026.

The Health Hydro has been closed while the first phase of major refurbishment was carried out. It is now getting ready to welcome back swimmers and gym users to refreshed spaces in the much-loved historic property when it reopens in the new year.

The restoration project has delivered a range of improvements, including new changing rooms, a redesigned entrance hall, gym and activity space, enhanced energy efficiency, and new plant areas and equipment to support the building long-term.

As is common with projects in Grade II* listed buildings, detailed early investigations highlighted challenges that required careful redesign to protect the Health Hydro’s heritage. Extensive safe removal of asbestos was also completed as part of the work, ensuring the building is ready for future phases of restoration and continued community use.

Funding for the first phase has included grants from Historic England, Towns Fund money, Section 106 funding from developers and investment from the Council.

Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, said: “It’s fantastic that the Health Hydro will reopen in January, and I want to thank everyone involved for the skill and care they’ve brought to this complex first phase.

“The Hydro is a unique and historic building and taking the right approach has meant working thoughtfully and safely at every stage. The result is a facility that’s ready to welcome people back, with significant improvements already in place.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing swimmers and gym users enjoying the Hydro again. And while this reopening marks a major milestone, we’re continuing to work hard to secure funding for the next phases of restoration.”

Future phases of regeneration are planned. The Council has recently received planning approval and listed building consent for a second phase of works focused on the main pool hall, including improvements to the ventilation, accessibility and environmental performance, alongside further conservation and restoration work.

Although funding for this has yet to be secured, the Council is working hard to identify funding options.

Work is also underway to restore the roof of the Turkish Baths Relaxation Room, thanks to additional funding recently secured from Historic England’s Heritage At Risk Capital Fund.

Barnaby Rich, GLL Partnership Manager for Swindon, added: “We are looking forward to welcoming back our customers to the Health Hydro in January.

“With a comprehensive gym fit out, renovated communal areas and changing rooms and the first phase of the swimming hall refurbishment now complete, anyone coming through the doors will see numerous improvements.

“While extensive ‘behind the scenes’ work has also taken place to improve energy efficiency and upgrade plant and equipment; contributing to an improved customer experience.”
