Our Better Health Senior Membership is specifically designed for those aged 66+

The membership is offered at a great value of £46 per month and gives you unlimited access to swimming, fitness classes, gym and social activity sessions at Canons Leisure Centre aswell as use at the other centres in the borough.

At Canons Leisure Centre, we believe that age is just a number and that there are endless possibilities for enjoyment and enrichment, regardless of one's stage in life. Therefore, age should never hinder anyone from embracing an active way of life.

Explore our range of engaging activities, carefully designed to meet the needs and interests of seniors. Our selection includes gym, fitness classes and swimming sessions. These activities provide the opportunity to meet new people and to have a catch-up with friends, with each of the activities intending to improve physical well-being, enhancing health and acting as a social hub for like-minded individuals.

Canons Leisure Centre is also working closely with Morden Leisure Centre and Wimbledon Leisure Centre & Spa in collaboration with Merton to offer free swimming for over 65's. To find more details on this and for available times please visit Merton Free Swmming

Introducing Basics

Whatever your level of fitness, you're welcome to attend our lower intensity fitness classes with simpler movements which help you build confidence and the foundations to get moving.

We have a number of BASICS classes which run weekly at Canons Leisure Centre which may suit your ability.

Meet Our Senior Co-ordinator

Meet Marcia Chung, our super friendly Senior Co-ordinator. Marcia has worked in the health and fitness industry for almost 20 years, teaching a variety of classes and motivating people to reach their fitness goals. She strongly believes that age should not be a barrier to anything and any generation should be able to enjoy exercise.

Senior Activity sesssions take place on Thursdays from 12:00 and include board games, hot drinks as well as the opportunity to get some additional advice on specific gym equipment or exercises. Table tennis is also available on request.

Marcia helps Canons Leisure Centre host weekly Senior Activity sessions on a Monday in their sports hall. These sessions include badminton, short mat bowls, table tennis, board games, dominos and short tennis as well as refreshments.

Senior Activity sessions also take place at Wimbldedon Leisure Centre on Thursdays from 12:00 and include board games, hot drinks as well as the opportunity to get some additional advice on specific gym equipment or exercises. Table tennis is also available on request.

Benefits of Physical Activity

Senior Activity Sessions

Our senior activity sessions offer a great opportunity to social whilst also engaging in some games and activities.

On Thursdays at Wimbledon Leisure Centre offers a warm room with hot freshments available. You can try you hand at dominoes, draughts, card games and dominoes, with table tennis available in the studio upon request. 

If you wanted to, you can pick the brains of Lynn who will take you on the gym floor to go through any exercises you may feel benefit your workout going forwards. 

These sessions are for you to enjoy and can be catered based on feedback received.

Senior Walking group launched at Wimbledon Leisure Centrer from Monday 15th April, meet at the studio at 12.30pm.

Canons Leisure Centre opens up its sports hall on Mondays to a range of activities. Many sports available including short tennis, short mat bowls, darts and badminton . There are refreshments available throughout and the session is looked after by a small committee who also arrange regular field trips for those interested.

On Tuesdays at Morden Leisure Centre you'll be able to take part in table tennis, short mat bowls, a fitness class, disc golf, pitch and putt and boules. Every week from 14:15 - 16:15pm.

Benefits of the Gym

Regular strength training at the gym can help seniors maintain and improve their muscle strength. Building and preserving muscle mass is crucial for mobility, balance and overall functionality. Workouts often include stretching exercises that improve flexibility and joint range of motion, which can reduce the risk of injuries.

Swimming sessions are bookable as either ‘Swim for Fitness’ sessions - involve lane swimming - or ‘Swim for All’ sessions - mean an open pool layout. These sessions are normally for an hour and can be booked via the Better UK app or online. Click ‘Swimming’ to find out more.

Fitness classes for seniors are typically designed to accommodate different fitness levels and abilities. The combination of physical activity, coordination challenges and mental engagement in following instructions and learning new movements can contribute to improved cognitive abilities.
