Junior Gym and Classes

WHAT IS JUNIOR GYM?

Junior gym is a session dedicated to 11-17-year-olds. This can be the beginning of their fitness journey. We aim to create a safe environment that’s fun and effective, while improving their health and wellbeing.

All junior members are required to have a junior gym induction with one of our fitness instructors before being allowed access to the gym. This ensures their safety and the proper use of our gym equipment.

Our Junior Gym sessions are available at the following times: 

  • Monday-Friday: 15:30-17:30
  • Weekends: 12:00-15:00
  • Additional sessions are available during holiday periods, Monday-Friday 09:00-11:00

Junior Gym Induction

Before attending their first junior gym session by themselves, all juniors must book and attend a junior gym induction.

These inductions are conducted by our Fitness Instructors, who hold a Level 2 fitness qualification, and are held in small groups of up to five people.

The inductions can last up to 30 minutes and cover all health and safety information pertaining to the gym. Our Instructors will also explain gym etiquette, gym rules and demonstrate which equipment juniors are permitted to use.

The fitness instructors will be present to ensure that all equipment is used safely and that the rules are followed.

Junior Gym Sessions

Our Junior Gym sessions allow our pre-paid members aged between 11 and 17 to attend the gym between:

15:30 and 17:30 Monday-Friday

12:00-15:00 on Weekends.

All users must book in advance of attending the site and have already completed a Junior Gym induction before booking.

During holiday periods, we also offer sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Monday through Friday.

Basic/Family Fitness Classes

Our basic and family fitness classes take place throughout the week. They are designed to have a lower impact and a shorter duration.

We offer a variety of classes and want to be as inclusive as possible, and we want to offer a wider variety of options for our members.

Basic Classes

Our basic classes are open to all members, so there can be a wider range of members taking part.

Family Classes

Our family classes are aimed at those juniors who may be less confident and might want someone to come with them. The idea is that we have a parent or guardian accompany them in the class to help build their confidence.

All of these classes can be found on the 'BETTER UK' app or online.

Junior Gym Rules

Junior members have access to most of the equipment in the gym, which includes:

  • Cardio machines (treadmills, cross-trainers, upright bikes, spin bikes, recumbent bikes, steppers and rowing machines) 
  • Resistance machines (chest press, chest fly, lateral row, cable pulley machines, leg press, hip adductor, hip abductor, lat pull down, shoulder press and more) 
  • Functional Equipment (TRX ropes, kettle bells, bosu balls, skipping ropes, steps, slam balls, battle rope, plyo boxes, small free weights) 

Junior members are not permitted to access the free weights area. Juniors are also recommended to use the lightest weight plates when using the resistance machines, as too much weight can damage their development and cause issues in later life.

BETTER GYM ETIQUETTE

1. CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF
• Please use the supplied wipes and sprays to wipe down equipment after use. You can also bring a gym towel from home


2. SHARING EQUIPMENT
• During busy times please be open to sharing equipment between sets if you’re going to be on it for a long period of time
• Try and limit your time to 20 minutes per piece of equipment
• Try and keep to 2 users per piece of equipment (especially during busy times)


3. BAR SAFETY
• Please load each side equally (one plate at a time) and use collars/clips to secure


4. KEEP THE GYM TIDY
• Please put your weights back after use
• Never leave plates and dumbbells on the floor
• Please do not use chalk as this creates a lot of mess


5. RESPECT OTHERS’ PERSONAL SPACE
• If a piece of equipment is in use try to find another exercise to do until it becomes free. You can ask our FI’s to help with alternative exercises if you’re stuck for ideas
