Sports Centre in South Oxfordshire to get £127,000 investment

South Oxfordshire District Council is investing £127,000 in the Park Sports Centre.

Work will begin at the centre, which is next to Wheatley Park secondary school, on 6th January 2020 and is expected to last ten weeks. The sports centre will remain open throughout.

The majority of the work will involve the replacement of the roof which covers the three squash courts and five-court sports hall. This is the original roof which dates from when the sports centre was first built in 1985.

Over the years many tiles have come loose and been replaced but a recent building inspection has shown that missing tiles had allowed water damage to the roof itself. In addition, loose slate tiles could cause a danger to staff and members of the public.

Workers will remove the existing heavy slate tiles and replace them with more robust, lightweight sheet metal roof tiles. Additionally, work will be carried out to upgrade the building’s insulation to improve energy efficiency.

It is expected the work will be completed by the end of November

Cllr Maggie Filipova-Rivers, the cabinet member for community services, said; “The council has considered just replacing the affected tiles, but this doesn’t reduce the risk of more tiles coming loose and causing a safety risk to the public as well as the problem of water damage to the building.

“The investment in the roof will improve safety and energy efficiency and also mean the centre can be enjoyed for years to come.”
