This week we are celebrating a significant milestone in Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre’s short history. For the first time since the centre opened its doors in December 2019, the amount of members has surpassed the 5000 mark.

The Leisure Transformation Project has seen £105 million invested by Belfast City Council over ten years to improve leisure centres, programmes and services in Belfast. This is the largest investment of its kind in the UK. Lisnasharragh’s opening was during the second phase of this programme and was established as Belfast’s Aquatic Centre.

Lisnasharragh opened on 2nd December 2019 which coincided with the closure of the old Avoniel Leisure Centre one day before. The centre was set for a “soft” opening for the month of September, however, this turned out to be one of the busiest centre launches of a Better facility in recent years.

Following a busy opening period, the centre usage continued to grow at a rapid pace until the most unforeseen circumstances of our lifetime. On March 17th 2020, Lisnasharragh closed its doors to the public with no indication as to when we would be open them again.

After several months of uncertainty, the leisure industry was given the go ahead to reopen with some strict restrictions in place. A few days later the gym and fitness classes were back on offer on 10th July 2020. This gave the centre a real soft launch with areas and activities gradually introduced over the following months.

The centre adhered to the varying levels of restrictions over the next year which included another enforced closure on Christmas Eve through to May. Restrictions eased and ultimately ceased in the following months allowing the centre to maximise the potential of the centre. The facilities on offer are now second to none with the centre accommodating some of the widest range of services available in one place.

This is the home of Belfast’s largest pool, a 25m 8 lane pool with a 250 seat viewing gallery. The pool has hosted some of the country’s largest aquatics events in recent years, bringing real high level competition back to Belfast which previously would have gone elsewhere. The pool hall also includes 2 more pools including a diving pool with a movable floor and a confidence water pool for younger users.

With a large 140 station gym, 3 fitness studios, a 4 court sports hall and outdoor 5-a-side pitch, there is no shortage of choices for members to find a way to get active with something they enjoy. From pickleball to aqua aerobics, Lisnasharragh has something for everyone.

Belfast has 15 leisure centres; however, 30% of the citywide usage for all activities is at Lisnasharragh. The centre has now had over 1 million user visits and boasts a permanent staffing team of 40 which is supported by a similar amount of flexible workers.

Whilst the membership base has grown to be one of the largest in GLL’s estate, the relationship with all of our individual customers remains a priority for the whole team in the centre. Lisnasharragh wants to celebrate all 5000 of our loyal and wonderful members and thank every one of them for making the centre what it is. Keep an eye out this month for some 5000 themed challenges and activities.
