Sporting Memories Club Helps Older Residents Stay Connected and Active
Our weekly community group at Abbey Leisure Complex is helping older residents combat loneliness, improve wellbeing, and build lasting friendships through the power of sport and shared memories.
The Sporting Memories Club, held every Tuesday from 12pm to 2pm at Abbey Leisure Complex on Whitehill Road, Cambridge, we welcome people aged 50 and over, including those living with dementia, experiencing depression, or facing isolation and loneliness.
The sessions provide a friendly and supportive environment where members can come together to share memories of sporting moments, enjoy social interaction, and take part in activities designed to promote both mental and physical wellbeing.
The club plays an important role in reducing social isolation by bringing older people together regularly, helping them form meaningful connections and friendships within their local community. In addition to supporting mental wellbeing, the sessions encourage participants to stay active and maintain healthier lifestyles.
Regular attendee Lizzie spoke about the positive impact the group has had on her life.
"I love coming along to this group. It is hard to find a club where other people have the same feelings as you. We have a great group and enjoy meeting up weekly."
Mary, another member of the club, highlighted the social benefits of attending.
"I love coming along to this group; it's nice to sit and have a cuppa with new friends."
The Sporting Memories Club continues to provide a valuable lifeline for many older people in Cambridge, creating a welcoming space where friendships flourish, memories are shared, and wellbeing is enhanced.
The club meets every Tuesday from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at Abbey Leisure Complex, Whitehill Road, Cambridge CB5 8NT.
New members are welcome.
