Better Eastern Members Raise £8,300 for Cancer Research Wales with Inspiring London to Paris Cycle Challenge

Members of Better Eastern Leisure Centre have once again demonstrated the power of community spirit, determination and teamwork by raising an incredible £8,300 for Cancer Research Wales through a series of fundraising events culminating in a challenging 500km cycle ride from London to Paris. 

At the end of 2025, Eastern members Andrew Church, Nick Redman, and two friends set themselves an ambitious challenge. Inspired to support a cause that affects so many families, they committed to cycling from London to Paris while raising as much money as possible for Cancer Research Wales. 

The fundraising journey began in February with a charity spin event at Asda Coryton, where Eastern Leisure Centre kindly loaned spin bikes to support the challenge. The event proved hugely successful, raising more than £700 thanks to the generosity of local shoppers. The team then hosted a quiz night at Cardiff Golf Club in April, complete with a raffle and auction. With over 100 guests attending, the evening raised an impressive £4,000 for the charity.

The highlight of their fundraising effort came in July when they completed the remarkable 500km ride from London to Paris over four days. Throughout the challenge, the cyclists experienced several memorable moments, including a visit to the Memorial to the 38th (Welsh) Division at Mametz Wood, a significant First World War site that commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of Welsh soldiers during the Battle of the Somme. The poignant stop provided an opportunity to reflect and pay their respects before continuing their journey to Paris. The physically demanding ride was the culmination of months of preparation, dedication and determination, helping the team raise an outstanding £8,300 for Cancer Research Wales.

Both Andrew and Nick are familiar faces at Eastern Leisure Centre, regularly attending the popular Group Cycle classes led by Nikki Lewis and Harley Holland. Their commitment to these sessions helped build the endurance, strength and determination required to take on such an epic challenge, while also highlighting the supportive fitness community that exists at Eastern.

Everyone at Better Eastern Leisure Centre is incredibly proud of Andrew, Nick and their fellow riders for their outstanding achievement. Their dedication has not only raised vital funds for Cancer Research Wales but has also inspired members, staff and the wider local community.
